Exploring Life & Business with Jenny Fahrner of Lion Heating and Air LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Fahrner.

Hi Jenny, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started working in the Heating and Air Conditioning industry when I was 17 at a commercial shop in California. I then went onto school, to get my Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
After graduating, I moved to Utah and gained more experience working for a commercial and later residential contractor. It was through these experiences that I discovered my passion for running a business. I found that I enjoyed the responsibilities and challenges of managing a company more than any other job I had held. It has been a long 2.5 years, but with good contacts and hard work we have only seen the business grow.
Currently, our focus is primarily on residential services. However, we have begun to take on commercial projects and are excited about expanding our offerings to serve both residential and commercial clients who need reliable heating and air conditioning services.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh no, pursuing my contractor’s license was far from easy. I had to attend classes in the evenings after work and do a ton of research to figure out the next steps at every turn. Even after obtaining my license, just securing the necessary funds to get the business up and running proved to be a challenge.
One of the biggest obstacles has been reaching new customers. Many people are accustomed to hearing the same sales pitches over and over, and it can be difficult to get them to see that we approach things differently. My goal is always to help people understand that our business stands apart from the rest.

As you know, we’re big fans of Lion Heating and Air LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Our primary focus is on helping homeowners make informed decisions about their heaters and air conditioners. While replacement is sometimes necessary, our priority is to extend the life of each unit whenever possible. We are passionate about our work and strive to be fair and honest contractors for every customer.
We take time to inform our clients about how easily people can be taken advantage of, especially when they lack information. By educating our customers, we help them understand exactly what they are getting, enabling them to make informed decisions about their needs.
Part of our commitment includes guiding clients to confirm things such as contractors’ licenses, business licenses, and insurance. We also take the time to help our customers understand the details of their warranties and clearly present all available options for repair or replacement. Our approach is never to pressure anyone into making a decision. With over 20 years of experience in the industry, I am well-equipped to provide honest, straightforward advice.
What I’m most proud of is becoming a union contractor. Almost all my competitors are non-union shops and the wages aren’t where I think they need to be for the industry. We are proud to be a union member, because it sets a fair wage and benefit structure for the most talented employees.

What were you like growing up?
Probably a bossy pain in the butt if you ask my sister! I kind of am a little bossy though, which doesn’t hurt when you need to get things done.
I loved any game that took us into the real world. I wanted cities set up with banks and doctor’s offices so we could have our own little town. I guess I just wanted to be a grown up.
I always loved animals, especially dogs. They just seemed like the best friend you could ask for. Even now, my 2 dogs are super important to me and I love having a good running partner.
