Inspiring Conversations with James Musser of Blue Mountain Contractors LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Musser.

Hi James, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my plumbing career at 18 years old, starting out on residential jobs where I learned the fundamentals of the trade and built a strong foundation of hands-on experience. Over the years, I expanded into commercial and industrial projects, steadily advancing my skills and leadership abilities. My journey took me from small-scale home plumbing to managing large crews and complex systems on high-profile sites. One of the highlights of my career was having a hand in running the entire plumbing department for one of the largest mechanical contractors in the United States at the Meta site in Eagle Mountain, Utah—a massive, cutting-edge project that required precision, organization, and expertise.

A year ago, I took the next step in my journey by starting my own plumbing business. Building it from the ground up has been both a challenge and a privilege, and I’ve truly enjoyed watching it grow. Each day brings new opportunities to serve customers, provide honest, quality work, and continue building a company that reflects the values I’ve carried throughout my career.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road. We have encountered many struggles in first, our expectations. We thought it would be like flipping a switch, turn it on and start working immediately. We have learned that it takes time and patience. We have worked hard at building a clientele who trusts us and will use us repeatedly.

Trying to gain any of the market share from the big players has proved to be a daunting task, requiring diverse innovation and thinking outside of the box when it comes to affordable marketing.

We’ve been impressed with Blue Mountain Contractors LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a plumbing/HVAC company. We do residential/small commercial projects all around the Wasatch Front. We specialize in water heater and boiler replacement and retrofit as well as water treatment and HVAC retrofit.

We have an extremely honest sales approach that doesn’t always make the most money, but steadily ensures trust from the community, which is critical to maintaining a reputation with integrity as its main feature.

We offer a 10% military discount and third-party financing, as well as seasonal discounts throughout the year.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The process of building something big requires an even bigger price in time, effort, and struggle than most people think about when going down this path. But building something big aligns with at least twice as much input, and in the end its gotta be worth it, or we would just give up today. However, that is not in the cards. We have a vision to have a sustainable, stabilized, lucrative business that will be of generational benefit within our family. With all the things going on in our modern economy and world, we started down this path with that vision in mind. We feel that this will all be worth it, both to our family, and people involved in our company, and also to the community for having an extremely qualified and honest player in the plumbing/HVAC space.
