Rising Stars: Meet John Womack of Tampa

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Womack.

Hi John, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well it all started when I was a young boy and I got first introduced to comic books. My dad taking me and my brother to flea markets that were around and if we found a few comics in some cheap bins for maybe a quarter or fifty cents apiece he might buy a few for us. They were always a fun read but I became fascinated with the art inside the pages. And with any different comic came a different art style, it was all so wild and vibrant it became so easy to get engrossed in the story.
In the years that came after it went from a hobby to an obsession. Not only did I want to read more and more comics from all kinds of different publishers but I also wanted to know the mythos of the characters and even the creators behind said characters themselves. It was exciting.
Nowadays I take all that I have learned growing up from the writing and artistry of so many different styles and I use it to feed my own imagination into creating my own original characters and stories in the comic books that I now publish myself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Drawing and creating comics is my dream. And like anyone who has a dream they want fulfilled walking the path to the end result can by a rocky road. The path I walk (and still walking) has had its twists and turns, it’s ups and downs and some setbacks but as long as I believe in myself and never go full stop I can say no matter what I did my best and I’ll never quit.
The biggest struggles for me are understanding the business and trying to find ways to get into the business. From that can come self doubt but I always try to push forward and don’t let it get to me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a self-published comic book creator. I am very proud of every single page I draw and write. I do my best with every piece I put out. I may not be the best artist or the best writer but I’m different. I like how I draw because it’s not something you see everywhere.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Going out in the woods behind my house and just wondering and letting my imagination flow. I grew up in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina
