Hannah Sparrow shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hannah, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something that has been bringing me joy lately is the practice of yoga. I have always enjoyed yoga since I was younger and I really value being able to sit still with my thoughts and my body, as well as the meditation and mind body connection that comes with it. I grew up as a cheerleader, dancer, and gymnast, so being able to maintain not only the exercise but also learning to enjoy my body’s movements without the need to compete or perform has been helpful.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a wedding photographer and have been photographing weddings for about two and a half years, and I truly love it. My work has taken me everywhere from Delaware to Hawaii, and since traveling is one of my biggest passions, I get so excited when I have the chance to capture destination weddings and adventurous elopements. Most of my weddings are traditional celebrations here in Utah and nearby, but each one feels special in its own way.
My brand is all about being fun, relaxed, and warm. About a year ago I introduced film photography into my work, which has been such a joy. It pushes me to be more creative, and couples love that they get both the timeless film look and the classic wedding photography style. I’ve also been testing out a film simulation camera that I’ll be adding soon for couples who want that style but may not be able to include full film coverage.
The very best part of my job is connecting with my couples. I always feel like I walk away with new friends, and while it makes me a little sad when the wedding day is over, I’m so grateful I get to share in such happy and meaningful moments. It’s a gift to be surrounded by so much love and to capture it in a way that couples can hold onto forever.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I think my husband has seen me clearly even before I could see myself. He has really helped me break through some of the anxiety that held me back from being my true self and taking risks. Before I became a photographer, I had always loved photography but felt stuck when it came to turning it into a career. He was the one who encouraged me to pursue something he knew I loved and believed I could be good at. His support helped me get over that initial fear and gave me the confidence to grow into a photographer who can serve my clients the best I can. I am so grateful that he encouraged me to chase my dream and do something that I truly value and feel valued in.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, I’d tell her she’s doing better than she thinks. Keep taking photos, keep learning, and stop worrying about being perfect. I know I tend to overwhelm myself with feeling not good enough, but it’s all going to come together. Not every shot has to be flawless, and not every edit has to follow the rules. Some of your strongest work will come from mistakes, experiments, and moments you didn’t think mattered. Those are the images that will shape your style and teach you more than any guide ever could.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
Fads are fun trends that come and go, like a popular filter or preset. Real shifts change how we shoot, edit, and share photos. If it sticks and changes how we work, it’s here to stay. Fads are fun, and I love adding them in sometimes, but I try to focus on finding my own style first. If I only chased trends, I’d never be able to keep up. I pick and choose what fits my work, and the clients who like the same things will hire me, while those who don’t will find someone else.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
There have definitely been days that felt like that, usually when I’m heading back from a shoot that just feels right. It’s that mix of nerves and excitement where everything feels special. Sometimes it’s a dream location, perfect light, or a couple who is completely themselves in front of the camera. On those days, I can’t wait to get started, and it reminds me why I love what I do. I especially love when my clients share their excitement for the photos or tell me how much they love their gallery, it makes all the long editing nights worth it.
