Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Nubia Soul GODdess (Elle Christina) of Salt Lake City

Nubia Soul GODdess (Elle Christina) shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Nubia Soul GODdess, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Music, 1000% music.

Entertainment is my career as a whole, being an author is just a part of that career, being a music artist is another part of my career that I operate in the most. Majority of the world knows me as Nubia, (Nubia Soul GODdess- Rock Soul artist), Elle Christina is my pen name. So listening to music throughout the day, creating setlists, creating play lists for various things, rehearsal with my band for performances, listening to music that my producers send me to check out – I can be “distracted” with music for hours on end, but it makes me create more in the end, so can we call it a win-win? 😉

Music is the only thing that engages both side of the brain at the same time, so listening to it, or performing it gives me a double dose of joy that I really can’t explain. Shower concerts? ME. Late night room dancing to a song that has captured the essence of everything? ME. Writing a new verse or hook in my note app to add to the already 400 plus notes in the middle of a drive? ME. Lol.

Music makes me loose myself and find myself all at the same time. You don’t feel that way when you listen?

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Of course!

I’m Nubia Soul GODdess, writing as Elle Christina. What makes what I do interesting is that I break rules in writing. I know there are structures to follow to help with reading and flow, and that’s fine, but I mean in terms of using “correct English” and how something is written, I write the way the character reveals itself to me. I think it makes for a better story, versus writing an entire book in “politically correct” English for the sake of saying it’s written correctly. Who’s deciding that?! Where’s the fun in that?! Being a creative is about doing JUST THAT, CREATING and having FUN! If you don’t enjoy the process of it, I can almost promise you, that when you’re done, the audience won’t enjoy the outcome of it either.

But in between booking more music shows, I’m working on my next release, “After 9 Months” which is a psych-thriller that I’ve been working on since 2020, it’s meant to debut late Fall this year, along with the introduction to a comic series that I’ve been tinkering with. Writing a comic book series was not something I initially planned, the idea just kinda landed and I scratched out everything for it. It will be a digital series first though. I want to see how well it goes before going into physical books. But yes, “After 9 Months” will be a 2 part release, and I’m actually nervous about this release; it’s been a minute since my last release which was rushed due to me obtaining my Entertainment Business degree during these last 4 years.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
This is a really good question…

Communication, understanding and transparency; together, not separate.

Just saying that makes me take a deep breath lol.

Communication is layered for everyone. You’ve got different upbringings, different understandings about the world, different dialects, different customs/cultures, body signals, etc. You really have to have an open mind when communicating with people because of all of that.

In my opinion and experience of life thus far, this is why travel is important, because it allows you to see outside of yourself, it allows you to see life as it is and not what is necessarily presented by the media or social media. Traveling allows you to experience people.

As I get older, I feel like travel and experience is the best teacher for everything, especially bonds with people. I know a lot of people say honesty is the best policy in situations, but I believe that transparency is better. So experiencing life and communicating that to others with transparency gives one more understanding of self and others.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Sh*t, far too many wounds to name.

Childhood traumas, domestic abuse, grief over a deceased significant other, police misconduct, multiple betrayals from family-ex friends-professionals, loss of income, failed marriages, you name it!

My spiritual life, music and writing healed me; it’s still healing me. Cognitive therapy, hypnotherapy, lots of shadow work, and did I say writing? LOL. Of course everyone has a story, but how you make it through, IF you make it through, is what matters.

Life isn’t perfect, but I’m happy, and I haven’t lost my drive, I haven’t lost my motivation, I haven’t lost my desire to be ME and live life on MY terms. I haven’t become bitter and afraid to try new things and go new places. I’m still excited to perform musically and create. I still believe in love. I know that there’s still good in the world for me to experience and have in my life.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That as you get older, you’re not as desired or useful, which is quite the opposite. The older you get, the more you experience life, the more you have to offer TO the industry and to the world.

That women are inferior and deserve less pay, less recognition, and less protection because they are a woman.

That our creativity can be replicated and duplicated by computers and is just as good. Remember, we created computers, they’re only as smart as we make them, they can’t out think us no matter how smart we make them – they lack a SOUL.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop waiting to release things.

I’d release once whatever project was completed whether it’s perfect or not, the right time or not, marketing/promo materials ready or not.

Music, books, ideas, all of it. Nevermind a copyright or any of that, just put it out. I’d rather die empty than be on my death bed with a heart and soul full of regret.

Sitting here thinking about it, maybe that’s what’s needed…
