Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Wood.
Hi Taylor, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started Chariot Bookkeeping in March 2024. At the time I was looking to start a career in finance, but wasn’t sure what area of finance to pursue. I was interested in the investment side but was disappointed in the career options.
I wanted to learn about economics and investment theory, but what I got was supply and demand charts or told to look at the financial statements. The financial statements part stuck with me the most because it felt like something that could give me real insight into how companies operated and why they make the decisions they did. Which was exactly what I was wanting to learn! However, nobody could really explain how the statements were put together and why that was significant.
That is until I found a bookkeeping program online. I was now able to learn what I wanted to know and do so on my own time. I signed up for the program and started getting ready to launch Chariot Bookkeeping right away.
1 1/2 years later my focus is working with new and first time business owners to track their finances and understand how their business is doing, what’s going right, where we can make improvements, and how much they can pay themselves.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This is the first business I have started/owned and it has been a slow and bumpy road. I am naturally very quiet and introverted. I have had to really improve my social skills and get out of my comfort zone frequently to let people know who I am, what I do, and why they should hire me. Selling myself has by far been the biggest struggle so far.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I got into bookkeeping because I love to study money and how it affects peoples decisions, especially for businesses. But, I haven’t always worked in the accounting industry. Prior to bookkeeping I have worked jobs in both construction and manufacturing. These jobs have ranged from kitchen cabinets and countertops to cookies and specialty chemicals.
Throughout that process I have worked along side many small business owners and solo entrepreneurs. And it’s no surprise that that’s who makes up my client base. Everyone of my clients are first time business owners many work in the trades. Having worked alongside these professions for close to a decade before bookkeeping I know how they operate and where they struggle. In short they love working with their hands and hate sitting at a desk behind a computer.
That’s where I come in. I handle the day to day office admin tasks so that they can do more of what they love and what makes the business money.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Growing up in Cache Valley it was a quiet small town that was also close to all the things I enjoy. I am really into adventure sports and the outdoors. In the summer I spend my weekends hiking, rock climbing, camping, and skydiving. In the winter time I hit the slopes and spend as much time as I can at Beaver Mountain.
The thing I like the least is that in the past few years it seems that a lot more people have moved here and traffic has gotten pretty bad.
