Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Montgomery.
Hi Donna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I found that when I was scared of something, I found a way to conquer that fear by just doing it anyway. My fear of heights made me take 4 years of military ROTC officer training, and from rappelling, climbing, sky diving, and skiing, I felt a sense of control over my fear, In my fear of water I became a lifeguard and joined the swim team in college, later in life surfing behind a boat, white-water rafting, and paddleboarding the narrows at Lake Powell. In my fear of social interactions and being looked at, I became a massage therapist, and in 2022, I entered a pageant against my better judgment as a 48-year-old with my best friend to support her since she wouldn’t enter without me, for an older Ms Utah Universe International pageant, and I won Ms Utah in 2022. Because I won, I was under contract to compete in Las Vegas for one of the big titles, and after 18 hours of wearing heels without a break and massaging all the contestants’ feet, I was awarded Ms Congeniality for Universe International and also won the Ms Classic World title for Universe International as well. I was put on the cover story of Clinton Living Magazine for my pageantry and was fortunate to be involved in many rewarding humanitarian causes that I am so grateful for. My fears of interactions became a strength to me over the years in public speaking, acting and singing in public, and teaching massage students.
I grew up as 1 of 12 kids in Utah, 6 girls, 6 boys, all close to me. My Mom had a lot of health issues when I was young, and I discovered massage after falling off a 30-foot cliff into a ravine of water when I was 13. Massage was one of the only things that helped me, and my mom needed massages, too. I saw my Dad struggling to help her have the energy to massage her. I took it upon myself to massage my mom daily for many years. In college, I did massage on the side for my friend’s dad, who was a chiropractor from 1993 to 1996. My Mom had torn her rotator cuff, and her doctor recommended massages. I moved back in with her and massaged her neck, shoulder, and arm daily for 2 months. Her rotator cuff tears healed so well that her doctor canceled surgery and was baffled. My Mom told her about me, and her doctor hired me the same day to work in her office. IHC gave me free massage school through the hospital. Later, the hospital felt that the space I was using in the hospital could be utilized better, so they moved me to the three-area hospital physical therapy centers, and I rotated through each center as needs came up. I did not like the feeling of my patients being a number and being given a timer for each person.
I received a job offer and moved to Dallas in 1997, and started a different massage school at Sterling to learn more in-depth about treatments. I was working part-time for HP, teaching digital photography seminars at grand openings, and was the liaison for the sports teams to come into the new stores to sign autographs when a store opened. Because my photography job introduced me to Dennis Rodman, where, after a work dinner with Dennis, we went to his party and I massaged him in front of a big group, this was the week he was married to Carmen Electra. The workers at the grand openings would brag about my massaging him, and I started getting more pro players as massage patients. My then-boyfriend introduced me to Michael Irvine and Emmitt Smith, and I was able to establish a great reputation for getting results with injuries. I worked on pro players, mostly Dallas Cowboys, as an independent contractor Rx Massage Practitioner for 20 years. I have worked on players for 14 different Pro teams over the years, up to now. However, currently, I am not working with professional athletes.
I moved back to Utah in 2017 and opened my Rx Massage Practitioner location in Syracuse. I opened a second location on Prospector Square in Park City in 2019. I opened a 3rd location in South Ogden in 2024, where my daughter started her own practice with me.
As a single mom and business owner, I enjoy finding ways to use my time that is fulfilling, to give back to the community with Beyond Bound charity events. I started this 501(c)3 in 2022, and I do 4 events per year.
I have an entrepreneurial mind and am currently getting a degree in Business Administration in June. This term, I am taking 23 credit hours, and I find I have more time the busier I am. I am hoping to open a sports injury massage school within 2 years.
I have struggled with ADHD. I believe I am growing and getting better, but I always need to be engaged in something that gives me purpose, vision, and meaning.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I had cancer in 2012 that I beat, and both of my parents passed away when I was 18. I lost my Dad, and at 41, I lost my Mom.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Rx Massage Practitioner?
I get massage results for sciatica issues, rotator cuff issues, frozen shoulder issues, stiff neck, or low back issues. I have been highly fortunate to be very good at what I do over the past 31 years.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
