Check Out Dustin Kearl’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dustin Kearl.

Hi Dustin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As a kid, I always was interested in helping other people. I Helped them mow their lawns to start, and turned that into a business. Then as an older teenager, my friend ran a business delivering water softener salt to older couples and he turned it over to me, while I cleaned medical buildings at night, and I was cooking at Sizzler, going to college full-time the age of 17, and working at a car dealership detailing and selling cars and bookkeeping. After returning from a service and proselyting mission for the Church of Jesus Christ, I worked in accounting at a CPA firm downtown. I got great experience there and soon ran circles around my peers. I left after a few years and started my own tax practice and graduated with a bachelors in accounting.

My emphasis was in complex tax structures as most people benefit from them in some way.

I was the CFO at a big company in Ogden that we eventually sold, while I built all of my companies that I own today. I am an active partner and not just investor in all of my companies.

A few of the companies I own outside of the tax practice include a precision Machine Shop in Ogden, a birth center in Weber and Davis County, a gold and silver mint in utah county, a healthcare staffing company from Logan to salt lake, a coin store that is very successful, a car detail shop in Ogden, several rentals, and recently we crafter and installed replica panels for tom holdman for the St. George visitor center for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Some companies I have sold include a home building company that we took from 4 home builds a year to 40, an iron fence company in St. George that we took from 3 employees to 30, and a private equity fund that made nearly 200% returns!

I have many business partners that I strive to make better people in thier communities and businesses, and to help them to become disciplined.

Amidst all these amazing things, I have five children 22 to 8. And I enjoy traveling, diving, finding birds, and supporting children in Mexico to go to school and stay through college. It should be everyone’s life’s work to find something outside of themselves.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Bad partners is always a problem. Partners lie and cheat… Change the deal… always get things in writing. Don’t trust generosity in business. They can trust me, but they should be willing to write it down and sign it if they are honest. Never do business outside the norms. There is no 4 star general trying to give you an amazing opportunity….

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a young teenager I won every award for art and singing I could find. I arranged music, and was very artistic when I was younger. This meant I was not the most structured person so I had to learn discipline and to just do whatever it take to get the job done. Artists are not the best at this. I use both sides of my brain and it’s fun to be well rounded.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Quitting is the only way to fail. Time block your life and prioritize your family. They’re the only thing you take with you to the next life…
