Hi Cole, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I initiated my career in the electrical trade in 2006, focusing initially on high end custom residential installations where I developed strong foundational skills and attention to detail.
I subsequently joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 354, spending three years gaining comprehensive experience across various large scale commercial and industrial settings. This period significantly expanded my capabilities in heavy electrical systems, complex wiring diagrams, and project execution across diverse environments.
Following my union tenure, I transitioned into specialized government contracting, primarily supporting operations at Hill Air Force Base. This shift led to deep specialization in mission-critical systems, including the installation and maintenance of advanced fire alarm systems, access control infrastructure, large capacity electrical gear, and sophisticated data/communications (data/com) networks. A career highlight included traveling to Minot, North Dakota, to successfully execute specialized electrical installations at multiple nuclear missile sites.
After 16 years of diversified field expertise, ranging from residential custom builds to defense infrastructure, I co-founded H&H Electrical Services with my colleague, Eric Hill. The company name, derived from our last names (Hodges and Hill)
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting a company, even in a field where you have 16 years of experience, definitely has come with a unique set of challenges and struggles. It has been a big shift from just doing the electrical work to also managing the whole business.
When you start, you’re not just the electrician; you are also the CEO, the bookkeeper, the marketing manager, and the cleaner. This often means working very long hours, which has been mentally and physically exhausting.
