Meet Lindsay Huss of Ogden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Huss.

Hi Lindsay, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a lifelong artist. I have been creating since I’ve been able to hold the tools to make art. Luckily, my family supported this from the start and I was provided with materials throughout my childhood. I excelled in the arts throughout junior high and high school, earning numerous awards. I decided to explore more options at university, but within my first year, I knew that visual arts was my path. I went on to get a degree in the arts and began teaching at age 22, starting before I had even graduated. I spent ten years teaching advanced art to amazing teens. I left teaching in 2019 to set off on my own career and haven’t looked back since.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I feel very grateful that my transition from teaching into freelance was a smooth one. My community connections were very strong and I was busy from the moment I began. However, choosing to be an artist full time has not been an easy road. I began my full time art career on June 1st, 2019. On August 30th, 2022 I faced a life-changing challenge when I was struck by a car while riding my bike to a concert. The accident resulted in a traumatic brain injury and numerous physical hurdles. While the road to recovery has been long, my determination to create accessible art has kept me moving forward—slowly at times, but never stopping. My dedication to public art and community building remains stronger than ever, as I continue to use my work as a platform for storytelling, celebrating powerful narratives from around the world.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a fine art mixed painter and muralist. My work is deeply rooted by life experiences while being informed and driven by my curiosity, passion and commitment to social justice. I am known for my vibrant portraits of not only humans, but the animals and plants that tell a great story. I am so proud of the many works I’ve been able to donate to my community. I believe that public art should be accessible to everyone. Whenever I can, I create works for nonprofit organizations, pubic schools, etc. I believe my determination and capacity for connection sets me apart. I truly love the people I’ve met through the projects I work on. Every time I leave a work site, I am devastated I won’t be able to see all my new friends every day! I truly thrive on human interaction and how well I’m able to get to know the people I get to work with. It’s a privilege to be intertwined in so many people’s day to day lives.

What makes you happy?
Being part of so many communities brings me so much joy! The outdoor community in Utah is phenomenal. I am a mountain biker, skier (water and snow), trail ultramarathoner, and overall nature lover. I may not be able to do these things like I used to (maybe I should say former ultramarathoner!) but being outside grounds me and puts a smile on my face. Even though it’s my career, creating art is where I am most myself. Without art, I’m not really sure who I would be. I am an artist through and through, whether it’s painting, designing and sewing clothes, dyeing my hair hot pink, or decorating my home, I bring a colorful artistic flare.
