Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane Baldwin.
Hi Shane, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From a young age, I’ve been passionate about gardening. In 2003, I was a seasonal ski instructor in the winter, and landscaping provided the perfect complement for the rest of the year. I began with a traditional landscape company in SLC, then transitioned to a water-wise business specializing in Xeriscaping. After about 10 years, I decided to launch my own company. In 2016, Timothy Langan and I created a business plan centered on Conservation, Cultivation, and Co-habitation. Our goal is to create outdoor living spaces that harmonize with the local environment, conserve resources, utilize native plants and materials, and invite wildlife and pollinators to share in the space.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a contractor, building relationships based on trust is paramount. Many people have unfortunately experienced or heard stories of negative experiences with contractors, whether it’s for landscaping or home remodeling projects. We prioritize clear communication and setting realistic expectations to foster this trust. We saw a significant surge in business during COVID-19, as people invested in their outdoor living spaces due to travel restrictions. Each year, we face new challenges in meeting evolving customer expectations. Some emerging concerns include drought conditions versus normal rainfall, budget constraints and rising interest rates, and even the impact of the social and political climate. As a seasonal landscape company, these same factors also affect the quality of our employee applications.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Silver Sage Xeriscape & Designs is a water-wise landscape company serving the greater Salt Lake Valley and Summit County. We pride ourselves on upholding our three core pillars: Conservation, Cultivation, and Co-habitation. We find that each project and location presents unique obstacles and challenges, which we approach creatively, always seeking the best solutions through problem-solving. Our process begins with a consultation, where we walk the space with our client. Once we understand their vision, we collaborate closely to create a 2D or 3D design and proposal for landscaping installation. We consider how to best utilize natural water sources, such as rain and snow, by retaining it within the landscape. We also analyze microclimates and select plants accordingly. We are passionate about attracting small wildlife and pollinators by using native and adaptive plant species. Converting inefficient overhead sprinkler systems to highly effective drip irrigation is a popular choice, as it significantly reduces water consumption and saves money.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
We have an extensive library at the office, featuring books on hardscaping, patio gardens, Eastern spiritualism, and Taoism. I find the best inspiration comes from being outdoors, taking walks in our many locally curated gardens, such as Red Butte Gardens and Jordan Conservation Garden Park. To stay organized, I use management apps like Trello, Google Suite, and Slack.
