Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle And Chalene Parkin.
Hi Kyle and Chalene, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Our family’s bakery roots go all the way back to the 1950s, when Kyle’s grandpa owned and operated one of the very first Spudnut donut shops in Nephi, Utah. Kyle’s mom still remembers playing in the booths as a little girl while her dad worked behind the counter.
Fast forward to today. After years in a creative design career, Kyle found himself at a crossroads as the industry shifted and opportunities dried up. We knew it was time to build something of our own. What started as a simple experiment in our home kitchen slowly became something bigger. Kyle began resurrecting his grandpa’s old donut recipe, sharing batches with family and friends, hoping to open his own shop one day!
Then one night we came across The Dough Miner. A small café in Salt Lake City serving house-made bagels, pasties, sandwiches, and the biggest donuts we had ever seen. The name, the food, the atmosphere, all of it told a story. Inspired by the Park City silver miners who carried pasties in their pockets so they would not have to surface for lunch, it was a place built on history, craft, and heart.
Ken, the founder, had created something truly special, but he was ready to retire and pass the whisk. We were honored beyond words that he chose us. It felt like one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments. The right dream, at the right time, with the right people.
Now, as the proud new owners, we are ready to pour our whole hearts into this place alongside our four boys. We invite you to come experience the magic our family fell in love with at The Dough Miner.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Our struggles were the long road with Kyle’s job leading up to finding the Dough Miner, and it felt like it just came at the perfect time to give us something to dive into and to make our own. We love to work hard and have something to teach our boys along the way!
What’s next?
We want to open up more locations and share more of what makes the Dough Miner special and unique with the community!!
