Daily Inspiration: Meet Cade Woolsey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cade Woolsey.

Hi Cade, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Cade has been working in mental health since 2015. He started as a floor nurse and worked his way up to charge nurse and then assistant director of nursing. He realized that all too often providers were rushing through their patients and not getting a clear diagnosis or they were too quick to prescribe and not offer other treatment options. In short, to change the quality of care he was seeing he would need to become a provider himself. He went back to school for his Masters in Nursing to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). He has been practicing as a PMHNP since Spring of 2022 in both adult and adolescent settings. He has primarily worked inpatient and outpatient at Miramont Behavioral Health in Wisconsin. He has found outpatient to be more fulfilling, as he can see the positive outcomes over time for his patients. He moved with his family to Park City UT in 2024 and is looking forward to bringing more accessible mental health care to Park City, Heber City and the surrounding Wasatch Back.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, opening up a private practice has been one of the most challenging things Cade has ever done. Getting insurance approvals, spreading the word in the community, paying for the obvious upfront expenses without knowing if he would make that amount back in profit. Even before being an NP, working as a floor RN had significant risk involved. On the inpatient side, being a nurse in psych involves hands on contact with unstable and aggressive patients. He has had blood contact multiple times and had to take medications and vaccines as precautions to ensure no blood borne illnesses were transferred. During COVID the original strain March 2020 the hospitals that did NOT receive protective equipment such as N95 masks were the psych hospitals the whole hospital was sick with the original strain and multiple colleagues he worked with at the time passed away.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Cade specializes in mental health. Having grown up with multiple friends and close family members afflicted with mental health disorders from depression with suicide attempts to bipolar it became clear what his calling was. Cade believes mental health can never be a one size fits all approach. The treatment plan needs to align with a person’s lifestyle, daily routine, beliefs and values, personal health goals. Furthermore, we are all seeking general happiness and what makes us happy differs from person to person. The key is finding something that can bring us happiness that is the healthiest route to do so. For example, maybe it used to be illicit substances but now it is hiking outdoors in nature. But sometimes it takes a while to try multiple things to find what we truly enjoy. And in that interim, where we are trying to “find ourselves”, maybe we need a little assistance. Maybe we need psychiatric medications or therapy or multiple forms of treatment. That is 100% OK and should not be frowned down upon in society.

What makes you happy?
Exercise makes me happy. I am by far a happier person when I get to go to jiu jitsu and lift weights other day. It helps my mood, my sleep which in turn helps with my energy levels, positive social interactions since I work from home most days. I also enjoy anything outdoors, biking, skiing, camping, etc. It’s not just vitamin D like everyone says..I am able to disconnect from other distractions and refocus on what I am grateful for, what other goals do I have and how do I reach them. Meditation in a form.
