Life & Work with Amy Erekson of Pleasant Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Erekson.

Hi Amy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My floral work started in 2016 when my oldest son went to his senior Homecoming dance. I wanted to make the corsage for his date myself and had no idea what I was doing. I had a yard full of pretty flowers and some wire. I did what I thought was a decent job. He told me it fell apart on the dance floor! Before he went to another dance, I took a private lesson, and binged all the info I could about flowers. My few of my sons friends that asked me to make them flowers as well. It was then I started learning all the in’s and out’s of floristry. I learned everything the hard way. Trial and error. It was not the best or the fastest way to learn. I could have made things easier on myself by buying a course or taking some classes. I also did not know then where this would take me. I had no idea that several years down the road I’d be doing multiple weddings every month. The very first wedding I did was for a friends niece. She somehow convinced me that I was capable and gave me the confidence to go for it! I did it, and from there it has snowballed for me!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been smooth nor has it been quick. Wedding ceremony backdrops and styles change. Floristry is a form of fashion and it is constantly changing. The popular blooms change. Design changes. Backdrop materials and shapes change. With every change I needed to learn about a new flower or a new technique. You’d be surprised how much there really is to know about handling flowers, and making them last throughout the day. I was mentoring someone recently who was about to do her first wedding. It was then that I realized just how much I do know and how much I have learned. Until the last few years I didn’t work with anyone who could show me the way things get done. I had to make everything up, I had to brainstorm and come up with my own way to to create. Now I have friends and a network in the florist community! We help each other for big events and we share our knowledge with each other. Creating with a community is so much better! I’m thankful to have found that!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Besides wedding flowers, I am obsessed with photography. I mainly shoot weddings, families and portraits. I want you to have the big and little milestones and moments of your life available to relive! I want to go to a beautiful location with your family and make it last forever! I want you to be able to scroll your phone with a feeling of nostalgia and a huge smile on your face as you look a the phots we took together! I am always hunting for beautiful locations and would love to meet you there!

What matters most to you?
My faith and family are top of the list for me! My faith gives me direction and purpose in this life and my family makes it an amazing life! My husband and kids really are my best friends and I would choose to spend time with them over doing anything else. I love being outdoors doing almost anything. Swimming, cliff jumping, hiking, mowing the lawn, tending my flowers, napping and watching the sun go down.
