Meet Jessica J Fox DeCarvalho of Kaysville, Utah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica J Fox DeCarvalho.

Hi Jessica J , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey to the floral industry began when I worked as my city’s flower bed architect/gardener. I planted thousands of flowers every summer for three years and it’s where my love for flowers started.

I spent most of my time in the flowerbeds or in the mountains. The mountain started blooming and I found myself gathering the wildflowers and creating designs.

I loved it so much I took a basic flower arranging class in college. The first & last time that class was offered during my college career.

My friends loved my designs! When they started getting married they asked me to do their weddings. I had a fun Instagram page (Called Foxy Flowers haha) for my flower posts and random engaged couples started to find me so I began doing weddings or more than friends and family.

I decided to go for it & make it into a real business after the demand was getting to be a lot. wahoo!

Unfortunately, after a few months of struggling to find information, making literally $0.80 cents an hour, not finding help/information from other florists/flower shops, & failing to figure out the business side of flowers, I decided to quit.

I knew I couldn’t do it without the missing information I needed to run a legitimate business. One that made a profit, allowed me to pay my bills, & live a normal life. I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I wasn’t going to waste my time.

I got an outside job where I could work with my hands.

I wanted to keep flowers in my life somehow. To rekindle my love of flowers, I found podcasts about flowers. I also found business podcasts, and then business/flowers podcasts.

It was here I found the missing information I needed to feel confident that I could become a successful floral business owner.
I kept my outside job while I built the foundation of my new business. I decided what part of the industry I wanted to be in, I rebranded (White Fox Floral), shifted my mindset, figured out how to market a floral business, and overall felt confident I could do it!

I got to a point where I could leave my full-time job & do wedding flowers full-time instead.

Here I am today, running a wedding floral business I am proud of and love doing!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Kinda as I mention before, I didn’t understand the business side of doing a creative job. I didn’t know how to price or what I needed to be legitimate. I wasn’t making a profit or enough at all to even make it worth doing. I needed to figure out the business side of everything.

What do you need from your wedding couples to get the most out of the experience?
Just a couple who loves my work and is willing to let me be creative and make magic for them. All I need is a few inspiration pictures. You don’t need to know anything about wedding flowers! That is why you hire a professional florist. We know all the things, so you don’t have to! We will ask you all the questions to get the information we need. We know you have never done this before and we are here to help!

I really love my business and what I do. It makes me happy and my favorite part is just celebrating! I love being part of the celebration by making flowers and designs. It is so fun.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Clear communication. Showing up and doing what I said I would do. I am very good at setting expectations and being transparent and I think my couples appreciate that. They know and learn that before they even meet me in person because I talk about it all the time in my marketing and on my instagram/other social media outlets. I also think just loving what I do and showing people that. They love to work with me because I love to celebrate them and make the process easy for them so they can focus on each other and their love.
