Today we’d like to introduce you to Gaby Griggs.
Hi Gaby, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My family is from Anchorage Alaska. When I lived there, I made and sold one-eyed pillows called “Cycloptitudes” at the Forest Fair in Girdwood. I moved to St George, Utah in the middle of High School. I was extremely upset about this move and during my fit of angstiness my Cycloptitudes melded into Toast and Triangle doodles. My comic characters began as extremely petty versions of my real life as I processed the move but they then turned into a regular creative outlet to share my ideas. My comics were originally just posted up on instagram but a few years ago, I started doing markets to sell comic prints, stickers, and toast and triangle themed propagation glasses. My dad and I wrote a book in 2020 called “How to Not be Attacked by a Bear” which we’ve been selling through the market as well. During the school year I teach 1st grade but by summer Toast and Triangles is back to the market!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
-My sister is wheelchair bound and has needed more help throughout the years. She’s pictured in several comics about the shenanigans we get up to.
-Constantly working to overcome self esteem and classic anxiety issues.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
For my professional career I am a 1st grade teacher in Provo and I absolutely LOVE my job. During the summer, I run a business called Toast and Triangles. I make relatable comics about my life and create characters based on the individuals I meet along the way. My dad and I wrote (and illustrated) a book during the middle of quarantine in 2020 about my dads adventures while he was working on an island in Alaska. The book “How to Not be Attacked by a Bear” is a goofy guide for kids on how to best deter bears while you’re hiking. What I love about Toast and Triangles is figuring out how to make complex facial expressions work on a simple potato-esque physique.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I teach a line dancing club after school to 1st-3rd graders which is SO fun
