Today we’d like to introduce you to Hailey Barton.
Hi Hailey, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
One August morning I awoke with a strong spiritual impression to become a preschool teacher, and that I needed to apply for a business license that day. I decided to follow that thought, so i applied, and started teaching a month later. Done. Easy, right? It wasn’t easy it took work.
How did I begin? Well the thing with beginnings is that there are many parts that lead up to beginnings. A few years back I found a goal that I had written a few years before that. It was scrawled in a notebook… “start my own business”. I had put it in writing. Goals are powerful. Writing down goals are powerful. But it takes Action.
That first month of August I researched a lot, I talked to people, I read a lot, and then and I took action. I made the decision and went for it. I was all in.
My background helped, I knew my patience as a mother of 6 would be used. I was hoping my sincere love of peoole would help with the advertising part of it. As parents signed up their children I felt honored to be the person they picked to help teach their children. I do not take their decision lightly. I realize the trust they are giving me, and the importance of every day, every minute I share with these sweet young children. They need to feel safe, trusted, and loved. That I know is a huge compliment, and I am grateful for friends who share their worlds with me.
My first year I had a small handful of students. Now after 6 years of teaching, I have grown to full class sizes, I even added an extra class last year.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing during Covid was easy. I started my business during an unknown pandemic so my daughter could have a preschool class. While it had some tough times, it was certainly worth it. After navigating the difficulty of the Covid particulars the challenge became creating my own curriculum. Through trial and error I’ve come to a place that really works. But yes, there were challenges.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I enjoy helping teach children to love to learn. Learning should be sought after and even craved for!
Reading is a powerful reservoir of knowledge. We read everyday. I also teach that it’s okay to not be perfect at what we do, as long as we do our best- then we can be proud of that.
Each child has a voice, and each child needs to be heard and share their voice in their own way!
In class we read, use our voices, we use our hands, we use movement, we sing, recite rhymes, we use actions, and we play!
Playing and learning to get along with peers in life is a very important skill we focus on.
I’m most proud when I hear from the parents about something their child learned in class! It means that it is sticking, & they love learning about it!
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
My most important lesson I’ve learned is actually a quote from a prophet.
“Never let a problem to be solved become more important than a person to be loved.”- Thomas S
Monson
