Inspiring Conversations with John Siggard of Superior Technical Solutions/IT4Eyes

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Siggard.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
John Siggard is the founder and owner of two MSPs (managed service provider) companies based out of St. George, Utah: Superior Technical Solutions and IT4Eyes, which primarily serve the Western United States but also have clients in the Southeast. He is also a co-author of the Amazon best-seller The Silent Battlefield, a book on cybersecurity awareness and defense strategies. John, who has worked in IT for over 20 years, founded Superior Technical Solutions in 2009. In 2023, John noticed a significant trend in their client base—most were in the medical field, particularly optometry and ophthalmology. In response, he launched IT4Eyes, which specializes in providing IT services tailored to eye care professionals. His MSPs offer two primary services—cybersecurity, including network analysis and security risk assessments, and general IT support.
John trains his team of technicians to provide excellent service for each client, big or small. In recognition of their commitment to excellence, STS won the 2024 Soteria Award for being one of the most trusted MSPs in North America and the Best of Business Award for IT Services in St. George, Utah.
John grew up surrounded by technology. His curiosity led him to upgrade the family computer, without his father’s knowledge. His dad was supportive when he learned about John’s interest, introducing him to a friend who ran a computer business—laying the foundations for his future in IT. As a young teenager, he worked unpaid for an IT professional, and at 17 he was hired by Salt Lake City’s Primary Children’s Medical Center as a network engineer. There, he gained invaluable experience in the corporate IT environment and a crucial realization: in critical areas, like the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), quick response times are vital.

In 2002, John took a 2 year leave-of-absence to serve in Mozambique, Africa. Witnessing the stark contrasts between the wealthiest nation in the world and one of the poorest opened his eyes to the reality of global inequalities and the blessings in his own life. Despite the limited technology available to the people of Mozambique, John found joy in helping the locals utilize what little they had. Serving others in such challenging conditions gave him a deep sense of fulfillment. The experience helped shape and define his personal values and expand his leadership skills.

After he returned he worked in various IT roles, but found himself troubled by the industry’s slow response times. As a result, an emphasis on responsiveness is deeply interwoven to the core of STS. John takes pride in the culture of integrity, respect, and communication he has cultivated within his team. Daily morning team talks and weekly team meetings allow the team to discuss ongoing projects, review performance, and ensure client needs are being met with comprehensive IT solutions. As a member of the nationwide MSP network, John works with other MSPs across the country to secure comprehensive and reliable local support for remote clients.

Family is a significant part of John’s life. Raising his special needs child, especially, has profoundly shaped his personal and professional perspective. Raising a child with special needs has enhanced his empathy and patience, making him a more attentive listener and better communicator. His role as an advocate for his child has strengthened his ability to champion causes and support others. This experience has also given him a balanced perspective on what truly matters, allowing him to prioritize meaningful work and relationships. In his free time, he enjoys strategy games, mountain biking, and long walks on the beach—that is, if there were any beaches in Southern Utah. Engaging in his personal interests helps John keep engaged and balanced.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—and that’s been part of what shaped who we are today. When we first started, we moved here with very little. We lived off savings and even sold personal belongings just survive and to keep the business moving forward. Those early days required a lot of sacrifice, but they also reinforced our commitment to doing things the right way.

As we grew, we had to quickly master complex and constantly evolving regulations, including HIPAA and later the Omnibus Act, which significantly raised the bar for cybersecurity standards. On top of that, FTC requirements continued to change, we needed to adapt our policies and practices to stay ahead.

One early challenge came from a client who chose not to follow our security recommendations. When they were later breached, we were still blamed. That experience was difficult, but it became a turning point. It taught us the importance of being firm, setting clear boundaries, and, when necessary, refusing services if best-practice security standards aren’t followed. Protecting our clients—and our integrity—comes first.

Cybersecurity is a unique challenge because you’re not just dealing with technology; you’re up against other people who are constantly finding new ways to exploit systems. There were many late nights worrying about whether we had every possible vulnerability covered. Over time, we built a security stack we truly trust, and that confidence allows us to focus on our core mission: keeping our clients secure and productive.

Alongside the business challenges, there were also personal ones. About nine years ago, my wife was diagnosed with CRPS, and we are raising a child with Fragile X syndrome. Those experiences added another layer of difficulty, but they also deepened my perspective, resilience, and determination, qualities that carry over into how we lead, serve, and support our clients every day.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
IT4Eyes is a specialized division of Superior Technical Solutions created exclusively to serve eye care practices. While many IT companies try to serve everyone, we chose a different path—focus deeply on one industry and become exceptionally good at it.

We provide fully managed IT services, cybersecurity, compliance guidance, and strategic technology planning tailored specifically for optometry practices. That includes protecting patient data, ensuring HIPAA compliance, minimizing downtime, and making sure technology supports—rather than slows down—patient care.

What truly sets IT4Eyes apart is our deep understanding of the optometric environment. We know the software, the workflows, the regulatory requirements, and the unique challenges practices face every day. Because of that, we don’t offer one-size-fits-all solutions. We build and manage customized, security-first IT environments that are designed for reliability, compliance, and growth.

Cybersecurity is a major focus of what we do. Eye care practices are increasingly targeted because of the sensitive data they hold, and we take that responsibility seriously. We’ve built a proven security stack and a proactive approach that goes beyond basic IT support. Our goal is not just to fix problems when they happen, but to prevent them altogether.

Brand-wise, what we’re most proud of is trust. Our clients know that we will be honest, direct, and firm when it comes to protecting their practice—even if that means pushing back or recommending changes that aren’t easy. We see ourselves as long-term partners, not just service providers.

What we want readers to know is this: IT4Eyes exists so optometrists/ ophthalmologist and their teams can focus on their patients with confidence, knowing their technology, data, and systems are secure, compliant, and professionally managed by people who truly understand their world.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I don’t see myself as a reckless risk-taker, but I do believe that meaningful progress requires calculated risk. For me, risk is never about chasing growth for its own sake. it’s about making informed decisions, understanding the consequences, and being willing to stand behind those choices.

One of the biggest risks we took early on was starting the company with limited resources and no safety net. We invested everything we had, financially and personally into building something we believed in. Later, another significant risk was was investing in specialized business consultants at a time when we had very little financial margin. It was uncomfortable to spend money we didn’t really have, but we understood that the right expertise could help us build a stronger, more scalable company. That decision paid off. The guidance we received helped sharpen our strategy, improve our operations, and ultimately contributed to tripling the size of the business within just a few years.

In cybersecurity, risk is something we think about every day. The reality is that there is no such thing as “zero risk.” Our job is to reduce exposure as much as possible through strong systems, clear policies, and proactive planning. That mindset carries into leadership as well. When we make decisions, we ask: What’s the worst-case scenario? How do we mitigate it? And how do we protect our clients, our team, and our reputation?

I also believe that not taking action can be its own risk. Staying comfortable, avoiding difficult conversations, or delaying necessary changes often creates bigger problems down the road. We’ve learned that being firm—whether that’s enforcing security standards or declining to support unsafe environments—is sometimes the hardest choice, but usually the right one.

Ultimately, I think good leadership is about balancing courage with responsibility. You take risks, but you do so thoughtfully, transparently, and with a clear plan to manage them. That approach has guided our growth and continues to shape how we serve our clients.
