Meet Jayson HaslamBrock of Plaid Skeleton Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayson HaslamBrock.

Hi Jayson, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I studied audio production in college and interned at a recording studio for three years. During my senior year of college, I decided to build a mobile recording studio in my car and drive around the Salt Lake Valley doing recordings for different local bands. When I graduated, I decided to take my recording skills down to Saint George, and built up a studio in my garage. Little by little, I built up the studio and I was able to move out of the garage and build a professional studio at the location I’m at now. Now I get to work with talented artists all across Southern Utah

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been bumpy to say the least. When the studio was in my garage, it got so hot that I couldn’t bring people in during the summer months. In my current space, I had to move a piano into it, an old 1920’s piano, complete with a steel frame. After all the work of getting it in there, I hired a piano tuner and found out that the thing wasn’t even playable anymore. At one point I had the opportunity to work with a movie studio (I’m not one to drop names) and they asked me if I had a vocal booth. At that point I didn’t, but I didn’t want to lose out on the opportunity, so over the weekend I built one. My good friend Ernesto Caballero, who often works at the studio himself, surprised me by painting it after I put it in. It turned out great and the movie studio was very happy with the result.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Plaid Skeleton Studios is a commercial audio studio. We are the only studio in Southern Utah equipped to record for any recording project that may come up. We have a fully analog, straight to tape option, or a completely modern digital recording set up. We have done work with Grammy nominated musicians, TV, Radio, Movies, Podcasts, Audio books, you name it. What I’m most proud of is the opportunity I’ve been granted to help out local artists, through hosting charity concerts, scoring student films for free and partnering with the local colleges to host events and showcase the all the local talent in this area.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Growing up I always had an obsession with rock music, especially music that featured big guitar solos. Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Hendrix etc… I was obsessed with learning how to play guitar. My mom wanted to make sure I got a traditional musical education and made a deal with me. If I could stick with playing the trumpet for 5 years, when I got to high school, she’d get me a guitar. I played the trumpet from 4th grade up until I got braces in 7th grade. My mom decided to concede and got me a guitar anyway for my birthday and getting that guitar was the biggest moment of my life up to that point. It was just a silly little first act acoustic guitar, but I played it every day. I played it so much that the neck literally came off of the body while I was playing it.
