Today we’d like to introduce you to Elsa Maxwell Bourdon.
Hi Elsa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I founded Shift Intercultural Education in 2023 when I realized there was a need for intercultural training within the U.S.
Before moving to Utah, I spent most of my adult life living abroad. Through my work with the nonprofit CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange, I became a skilled intercultural trainer and specialized in helping students and professionals adapt to new cultural contexts.
When I moved back to the U.S. in 2022, I realized my skill set as an intercultural trainer was transferable to domestic settings. My first gig as founder of Shift Intercultural Education was developing a course on intercultural leadership for law enforcements students in Minnesota. It was one of the most meaningful projects I’ve ever worked on, and it also kick started my work in the U.S. as an intercultural trainer.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My first year in business was quite productive and successful, but it has not always been a smooth road. Over the past year, changes in funding and priorities have impacted higher education, which have in turn impacted my business. But I have found ways to pivot and adapt, which is what intercultural leadership is all about.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Shift Intercultural Education started as a small business focused on supporting colleges and universities committed to creating a welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds and cultures. In that capacity, I work as a coach and a group trainer.
From there, my work has branched out to support all sorts of companies and organizations, from an ed tech start up, to virtual exchange programs, and an entrepreneurial organization. I never imagined I’d be working with such an array of organizations.
I’m known for my ability to facilitate to lead powerful group trainings and energize any group of participants. I’m also known for my warmth, impartiality, and integrity.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Because I have a professional background in the humanities (I was once a Spanish professor), most people do not know that I work with peace officer students in Minnesota. Working in the law enforcement field has given me immense perspective and respect for local and state police. Never have I felt more hopeful for the new generations of peace officers who will serve in the State of Minnesota.
