Ty, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ty Brown is an attorney-preneur driven by a simple belief: Lawyers can do better.
As a personal injury lawyer and litigator, Ty saw firsthand how broken the system was. Too often, injured people were preyed on by insurers and by the ravenous personal injury lawyers circling like sharks trying to sign the case rather than provide these accident victims with the information they need to decide whether hiring a lawyer made sense in their situation. The interests of the public seemed to be eclipsed by the interests of insurers and lawyers.
That conviction led him to co-found ZAF Legal, a legal-tech company dedicated to making personal injury claims more affordable, accessible, and empowering for everyday people. ZAF offers innovative legal solutions, including a fee-free DIY claims platform, free attorney consultations, and full-service representation—giving clients the exact level of support they need and want.
Throughout his legal career, Ty has successfully resolved numerous catastrophic, seven-figure personal injury cases. Today, he combines that legal experience with innovation and entrepreneurship to redefine how personal injury law works—lowering the cost of justice and putting power back in the hands of the client.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No—it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.
When you set out to challenge a decades-old legal model, friction is part of the journey. We weren’t just launching another law firm—we were rethinking how legal services are structured, priced, and delivered.
One of the biggest hurdles was regulatory. Operating inside the Utah Supreme Court’s regulatory sandbox meant stepping into uncharted territory . There was no playbook for building a law firm with non-lawyer ownership or raising venture capital in a traditionally closed industry. Every step required careful compliance, education, and trust-building with regulators, investors, and the legal community.
We have faced attacks from lawyers who are opposed to our push for technology and innovation in the practice of law.
And internally, building technology that simplifies something as complex as a personal injury claim is not easy. Translating nuanced legal strategy into intuitive tools required constant iteration, testing, and refinement. It forced us to think differently about how law should function for everyday people.
But those struggles were necessary. Innovation in a legacy industry is never smooth—but that’s exactly why it matters. Every obstacle reinforced why ZAF needed to exist in the first place: to lower the cost of justice and give accident victims more control, more clarity, and more choice.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Ty was one of those kids that wanted to try everything. Not a trouble maker, but terribly busy. He wanted to play every sport, taste every food, take every class, have every pet, try everything…you get the idea. Well-behaved but a real tiresome child to parent, to be sure. His personality is inclined towards leadership. He was elected student body president at his high school, and then made the state-wide student body president for all high schools in Utah.
