Today we’d like to introduce you to Philip Wintch.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Yeah I started Hilltop Counseling in 2019 because I believed that when people give their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs the power of speech they are able to find out what the truth of their life is. That truth then sets them free to decide their fate. That’s what psychotherapy does for people and I had a chance to provide it for them, so I took it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has had smooth parts and rough parts. They balance each other out and fundamentally the challenges actually made me stronger and the positives made all the pain worth it. The biggest struggles have been taking on the responsibility of leading a group of clinicians in their clinical practice. I have to be aware of the industry’s professional standards and legal requirements, the professional motives and desires of my employees, and the personal struggles they may be experiencing. I often find that real leadership takes a level of balanced and assertiveness that is overwhelming. It takes guts to step into that role and realize that your decisions affect the whole team in a profound way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in working with teenage and young adult men. The issues the modern men face are particularly interesting to me. I started my career in wilderness therapy and have a passionate love for the outdoors so working with men in outdoor settings such as on hiking trails, on rock climbing walls, or in a horse paddock is my passion. I am most proud of the young men who have contacted me throughout the years and told me of some accomplishment we completed together or some time we spent together that was meaningful to them. I have a profound ability to connect with and inspire youth and that’s what sets me apart from others.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Yes. It is to simply have faith that a mentor is out there for you. I often find that the younger generation just doesn’t believe in the older generation. They doubt that there is anyone out there who has a wealth of knowledge and experience that they want to pass on. That is two statements really: 1) That older generations do have profound knowledge they have aquired over a lifetime of toil, and 2) That the older generation cares enough to pass it on to the younger generations. Believe that, in spite of their flaws, the older generations do care and are worth learning from. Stop wasting time finding and focusing on the flaws of others. It’s such a poor cope out from life. Having such faith has worked well for me.
