Hidden Gems: Meet Makayla Peterson of Painted Palomino Aesthetics Hooves and Paws

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makayla Peterson.

Hi Makayla, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was a full time pediatric dental assistant when I went to Esthetician school, I would work 8am-4:15pm and go to school 4:30pm-10pm every night. I loved being a pediatric dental assistant but knew I wanted something with more flexibility, and to work for myself was my main goal! I watched my dad start his own business from the ground up, he worked long hours, put a lot of hard work into everything he did, grew quickly from word of mouth, and had amazing customer service, He’s always been my biggest role model and pushed me to succeed in everything I did growing up! I met my now husband at 18 and then started to have health issues and they were slowly getting worse, so working for myself became even more my goal. Working full time and going to school was not for the weak! I missed out on alot of events, family parties, friendships, etc. I remember going to visit my now husband at 10:30pm at night just so I could see him! I struggled with my health issues during school, had to miss some school due to surgeries, but eventually graduated esthetician school in October 2019! I then immediately got surgery to remove my gallbladder because my idiopathic pancreatitis had gotten out of control and we were desperate to find an answer to help! After recovering from that I started to do my esthetician services from our second bedroom in our home, it had a second entrance and I worked everyday, all day seeing clients for lashes, brows, and nails! I loved it and built a full clientele! In 2020 we had to move, we were in the beginning of a pandemic, and my health issues were the worst they had ever been. I was getting idiopathic pancreatitis, I had endometriosis that was at a stage 4, and was being hospitalized at least once a month for 3-4 days at a time. I decided to take a break from work at this time to focus on getting healthy again! I eventually got healthy enough to work again and started taking clients from my home again! In 2019 I took a fine line tattoo course and fell in love with tattooing! I’ve always been an artist in many ways so adding this to my services was really good for me! I’m now in a private studio in Pleasant Grove, Utah and offer fine line tattooing, lash, brows, and nail services! I’ve had issues with my health throughout the years, multiple surgeries, infertility, IVF treatments, miscarriages, etc. The one constant I’ve had is my clients, and I’m very thankful to be where I’m at today and I hope to continue to grow my clientele and meet more people and build more friendships! I could have easily given up, my body failed me multiple times but I stayed positive and continued to create art in every service I did and I truly believe it saved me in my lowest times! Thankful is an understatement when it comes to everyone who has supported me and made this dream come true, Painted Palomino has turned into everything I dreamed of it being and I’m excited to see what the next few years have to hold! I’ve loved being a business owner so much I started another one called Hooves and Paws, where I do dog/cat sitting, dog walking, farm animal care, reptiles, etc. It’s been a hard journey, but i’m just beginning and have so much more in store for me!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road at all! Health issues, and the pandemic made it very hard, but I never gave up! Today I’m very thankful for the Kayla who kept going!
