Krystal Neuenschwander of SLC on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Krystal Neuenschwander shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Krystal, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My fitness journey is something outside of work that has been bringing me a lot of joy, lately! I go to the gym 6-7 times a week. I started working on my balance with handstands and my flexibility with the splits. Also, I am incorporating other other workouts such as kickboxing, pole, and hiking into my routine. This has made me feel a lot better overall, but mostly, given me a new energy!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Oh, oh, hello! My name is Krystal and I am your official hype woman and photographer for weddings, events and all the creative portraits! I started NeuView Photography with the idea to capture life in a Neu way – with true to color editing and telling stories of real moments. My energy is always positively high and I use it to help pump up the big day, ensure things are stress free for my clients, and bring out your real personality in your photos. I can’t wait to photograph your story.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
Not to be cliche, but my parents are some of the most hard working people I know and they taught me how to accomplish hard work in my own life. My mom started as a receptionist at 19, and then 42 years later, retired as the VP of her office. I do not know one other person in my life who was able to keep a job that long, let alone, work the amount of hours she did to take care of her family. Yet, she still made it to my games after a long day of work to cheer me on. Then, there is my dad, also known as my coach. He taught me about consistency, repetition, and to keep getting back out there after I strike out. They are both still working hard to this day to make sure to take care of their family and to live a fulfilling life.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
One of the hardest times in my life was when I stepped on the scale and saw that I was 225lbs, the heaviest I had ever been. This stupid number was effecting my personal and work life in so many ways. It made me want to give up on a lot of things. For example, social media is a huge tool for promoting businesses today, but I had an extremely hard time making content that included myself in it. This made my business struggle even more. I, like many other people, have done countless diets and I had extremely low self esteem to even attempt trying to help myself. I knew that this was not going to be an overnight fix and my life needed to change.
So, I reached out to one of my clients that I have photographed before and she helped me get back on track. I am so grateful to look back and see that I ALMOST gave up on myself, but I didn’t.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Some of the biggest lies in the photography world are:
– The cost of your gear represents your skill level.
– If you don’t find a niche, you will never be successful.
– Photographers just go “click”.

I will fully admit that I do not own the most expensive camera or lens in the world. However, I love my gear and learned how to use it to create stunning photos that my clients love. Then, I have many different types of clients for all sorts of events: weddings, engagements, grand openings, creative portraits, Christmas parties, flash mobs, and more! I love doing and learning something new every day! There are so many technical things going on that we as photographers are thinking about during a session or a wedding such as lighting, composition, camera settings, and uncle Dan with his sunglasses on. I promise that there is WAY more going on besides “click” during a session.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Today, I am doing what I was born to do, even though I was told what to do many, many times. “Get a government job, you need the benefits, and retire with a pension just like your Mom and I.” Unfortunately, I told my parents everyday of my childhood that I could not just sit behind a desk all day just to get a paycheck. I need adventure, color, and movement in my day to day. Since I chose to be a photographer and quit my 9-5, I haven’t regretting it once.
