Conversations with Brighton Roper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brighton Roper.

Hi Brighton , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve had a successful and intentional acupuncture practice since 2009. One of my specialties became female infertility- helping women achieve successful pregnancies regardless of whether they were trying to conceive naturally, using assisted reproductive technologies, being of advanced maternal age, or had other concerns.

Over the last couple of years, something that piqued my interest was watching, in real time, how acupuncture helps regulate the autonomic nervous system. It is a modality, that within a short time -30 minutes or so- can bring the body out of “fight-or-flight,” reducing stress and promoting relaxation.
Approximately 25 years ago when I had my first experience with acupuncture, I felt a marked reduction in my anxiety levels during and after the treatment. That was really significant to me, because I have had anxiety ever since I can remember.

I have had patients remark to me that they felt “restored,” “creative,” were able to “problem-solve” while receiving acupuncture.
These type of things have always interested me. Having an undergraduate degree in social science, I loved studying psychology, anthropology and sociology.

Combined with other experiences I have had over the last few years, I became motivated to offer a different type of acupuncture treatment that I am referring to as “Homeostasis Acupuncture.” This refers to a type of acupuncture treatment that will harmonize both the mind and body. Rather than working from the framework of a “medical chief complaint,” I am using my refined clinical diagnostic skills that come from Chinese medicine (feeling the pulse and looking at the tongue) combined with my intuition and years of clinical experience to create an acupuncture experience that is relaxing, restorative and clarifying.

I am offering Homeostasis Acupuncture as a stand-alone service, or with the addition of what I am calling a “Manifestation Roadmap.” This includes things such as intention clarification, custom-tailored journaling prompts, daily gratitude practices, meditation surrounding intention-setting, honing your own intuition, and thinking and speaking your intention into existence.

It is commonplace for people to associate acupuncture with treating pain, and that is true. However, most of my clinical specialties are not pain-related. They are related to female infertility, digestive problems, autoimmune conditions,

Included in the list of things I offer to my patients are: Chinese herbal recommendations, Chinese dietary recommendations, possibly movement and stretching exercises, journaling prompts, etc., and clinically I use modalities such as moxibustion, cupping, gua sha, and light massage in addition to acupuncture.

And while the intuitive part of acupuncture is very much my passion at the moment, I continue to offer effective acupuncture for traditional medical chief complaints, and I am in-network with Cigna insurance.

In addition to being an acupuncturist, I am the mother of 2 children. I spend most of my “free” time with my golden retriever, Topaz, practicing yin yoga, and “practicing what I preach” regarding personal development and self-care.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, yes, it has been a smooth road. Some of my personal experiences, including 2 miscarriages, were the catalyst for wanting to help women with infertility and/or recurrent pregnancy loss. It was a lived experience and because of that I am able to practice compassionate empathy.

A few years ago in my personal life, I went through a divorce. That was one of the most difficult and transformative experiences of my life. It was a huge lesson in self-esteem and self-worth. I feel like I am able to help my patients who struggle with people-pleasing and boundaries.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart from others is that my acupuncture treatments are very intentional, personalized, and intuitive. One way that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is different from Western Medicine, is every diagnosis is broken-down via pattern differentiation. I wouldn’t use the same acupuncture points or herbal medicine formula for every patient who comes in with infertility. I am able to use diagnostic procedures such as feeling the pulse and looking at the tongue in order to identify the pattern.
In addition to “only” acupuncture, I may offer dietary recommendations, lifestyle recommendations, journaling prompts, etc.
I’m very proud of the fact that I am professional. I’m not just “going through the motions”- I’m genuinely interested in helping my patients achieve whatever outcome they are looking forward to achieving.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I lived in a rural area and spent a lot of time outdoors. Exploring, biking, playing. I also spent a fair amount of time at the library with a childhood friend (who is still my friend nearly 40 years later…).
My brother and I played golf, skied, snowboarded. I took piano lessons and flute lessons. I’m actually interested in re-visiting the flute at my current age.

For 4th and 5th grade I was placed in a program for “gifted children.” In 6th grade my parents placed me in a very alternative school. I credit that school with putting me on the path of becoming an acupuncturist. In high school, I traveled to Costa Rica with that school. I got sick while I was there. Our group also had a run-in with killer bees. I didn’t get stung much, but one of my classmates did.
Becoming sick and experiencing trauma really led me onto this path of alternative healing.
