Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Pilanca.
Hi Phillip , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I come from a small farm town called Salinas, in California, also known as the Salad Bowl. Most people have never heard of it. Most, if not all, of the nations produce comes from there. My father has been a welder fabricator and Journeyman Ironworker my whole life so I was brought up around metalworking. I took welding classes in high school, signed up for a few competitions in my youth as well and did really well in them. Since then my career led me to build and work on countless types of heavy trucks and heavy equipment, custom work benches, lowered trucks, you name it. I’ve always had a knack for building things. As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized i absolutely love welding and fabricating things. Anything from building a trailer from the ground up to something as small as a Valentine’s Day rose made of washers for my wife. I could spend hours out in the garage just building something I thought up on my way back from the grocery store. Took me all this to decide to start my own company called SPK MetalworX and pursue what I love doing.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part it hasn’t been too bad. It took a long time for me to realize my love for the trade and decide this is what I want for me and my family’s future. Not a lot of people do it which is what makes it so unique. I think the biggest obstacle is balancing being a dad, a husband, and trying to work a full time job all while trying to start a business.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about SPK MetalworX?
My business is called SPK MetalworX. The initials of my wife, me, and our beautiful baby girl. We specialize in welding and fabrication, and offer a mobile service as well. What sets us apart from others is, well we’re a small family trying to make a name for ourselves starting out of our own garage. I include my wife and daughter in everything we do and you don’t just get me, you get all three of us. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. I’m most proud of me taking the leap to put myself and my skills out there. It’s a scary thing but I hope to one day be able to leave my full time job and work for myself. I want to give something to my daughter so she has something she can pursue if she chooses when she’s all grown up. As far as our services, we offer welding and fabrication. From lowering trucks, heavy equipment repairs, trailer repairs, custom gates and fences, anything involving welding and fabricating. Our prices are probably the most affordable and of course we’ll work with you if you’re not trying to break the bank and still give quality work. We also offer a mobile service with onsite fabrication. If it’s something that requires us to travel we’ll come to you.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was probably all spent in my garage wrenching on my dirtbike’s or out racing on the weekends with my dad.
