Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Myers.
Hi Jared, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
For 25 years, I worked in landscaping. Hard, physical work. But I liked it.
Eventually, I started my own landscaping business. Lots of advantages: Better pay, more flexibility, more control. And, if you can believe, *more leads than I could handle.*
Things were great.
Then, everything changed.
I got injured.
2 bulging disks, a fissure in my spine, and a torn rotator cuff. (Issues I’m still dealing with–even after several rounds of PT.)
For the first time, I had to face some hard truths:
I’m not invincible. (And, in a business that depended on my body holding up, this was an extremely important lesson to learn.)
I was trading time for money. And *I* was the business. If I didn’t work, the money stopped coming in.
With a wife, three kids, and a mortgage, the question hit me: Was it time for a change?
But going back to school wasn’t a great option. I didn’t have the time, the money, or — if I’m being honest — the interest. I wasn’t “a school person.”
To be honest, I felt a little stuck.
Then, things changed again.
I saw an ad. (One of the only times in my life I’ve been grateful for an ad.)
A simple YouTube.
About bookkeeping.
The ad talked about flexibility, good income, stability… all the things I wanted.
It sounded great.
But…I wasn’t an accountant. I had no degree in accounting. So, I figured it was out of reach.
Then I realized something:
I didn’t need a degree. And I already had experience.
I had taken some accounting courses.
I had been keeping the books for my landscaping business.
and
I had three years of experience, keeping the books for my local church.
I had skills — I just hadn’t recognized them yet.
And, then—oh yeah—one more realization. A big one: I’ve got 25 years of marketing experience.
I had built a business from nothing, generated leads, created demand, and kept clients happy for years— I just never labeled it “marketing.” 🙂
Long story short, I took the leap. I opened shop. And the rest is history.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The two markets (landscaping and bookkeeping) are way different. Landscape clients come in quite a bit faster (like 10+ per month). And they are way more willing to take a chance on someone they don’t know.
Bookkeeping clients come in quite a bit slower (like 1-2 per month). And trust (i.e. competency and character) is the #1 factor in hiring a bookkeeper.
In short, the marketing and demographic has been way different than the marketing and demographic I’ve been working with for the past 25 years. Not bad. Just different.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
**Wasatch Bookkeeping** provides straightforward, hands-on bookkeeping services designed for small business owners who want clean books without the complexity. We specialize in weekly transaction categorization, monthly account reconciliations, and monthly profit and loss statements that let clients track performance month-to-month and year-over-year—getting them fully tax-ready by year-end.
## What Sets Us Apart
Every client gets a dedicated weekly day for review. On “your day”—say, Friday—you receive a direct email from me: either quick questions to clarify transactions or confirmation that everything looks great. This consistent, personal touch ensures nothing slips through, builds trust through transparency, and keeps owners informed without overwhelming them.
## What We’re Most Proud Of
Our simple, predictable process stands out in a field full of vague “full-service” promises. Clients appreciate the clarity—no surprises, just reliable weekly check-ins and actionable monthly reports that reveal what’s working and what needs tweaking.
## Key Message for Readers
If you’re tired of messy books or tax-season scrambles, **Wasatch Bookkeeping** delivers peace of mind through routine, proactive maintenance. We’re built for Utah businesses needing a trusted partner who handles the details so you can focus on growth.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people know me as the detail-oriented bookkeeper behind **Wasatch Bookkeeping**, but they’d be surprised to learn I’m a passionate home cook who loves experimenting in the kitchen with my kids. I’d take recreating our favorite restaurant dishes from scratch over dining out any day—it’s our family’s creative outlet after long weeks of number-crunching. This side of me brings the same precision and joy to family time as I do to balancing books.
Pricing:
- * What I charge: A little tricky to answer. The short answer is that I charge a minimum of $250/month, because of all the things I still need to do–regardless of the size of the business (including weekly categorizations, monthly reconciliations, and monthly profit and loss statements)–because I’m in my client’s accounts every week, and because of how available I make myself). But it all depends on account volume and complexity of the business. * More transactions means more time spent categorizing and reconciling. * More complex (with things like class tracking for multiple projects or locations) mean extra steps (and more time spent).
