Conversations with AK LeadTheWay

Today we’d like to introduce you to AK LeadTheWay.

Hi AK, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
BRONX! AK LeadTheWay! Born on February 14th, and lived throughout many of the disenfranchised communities in The Bronx (New York). AK’s first experiences with music came from being attentive to the beautiful voices of his mother and sister as they sung throughout the homes they lived in. Though his initial interest was because of their voices, his pallet for music would dramatically change when he got his hands on 50 Cents’ album “Get Rich or Die Trying”. His taste for music was ever changing, listening to everything from Aventura’s “ El Malo ” to BANG YONGGUK (방용국) – “ YAMAZAKI ”, but this marked the transition from writing casual lyrics to leaving behind a message. His journey from that moment on has been fraught with experiences many would see as challenges, but for him they were opportunities to persevere and show what his true vibrations are, despite circumstances. One quote he lives by is, “There are multiple paths to reach your goal, it is only your method that is unique”. As he paves the way through uncharted territory to accomplish what has yet to ever be accomplished, Akil becomes AK, and AK will LeadTheWay.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road traveled so far has been eventful and filled with many experiences and opportunities for self growth and enrichment. As William Ernest once said, “…it matters not how straight the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul”. To me this expresses the fact that your environment is what you make it, as opposed to your environment making you. Take control of what you can and shape the life you want. You must stand firm despite experiences otherwise you will stray from the path you’ve set out for yourself. Methods that helped me to stand firm is journaling. It gives me a tangible tether and reminder of the purposes I have set out for myself. Also, staying true to myself and being myself unapologetically while being open to change is the key to consistency and growth. Life will test your methods but stand strong.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most proud of the creativity, resilience and tenacity that I’ve been able to display. Life is about life. Redundant as that may initially sound, life is a huge concept that encompasses all living and breathing things, but it is also about the life that you give to inanimate things such as art. It is about the life that is given to your words. It is about people, community and the small things that make us wholesome, but also break us apart. So when i say life is about life it simply means that life is about everything that you give life to. So indulge, protect, experience and develop life. This is the mindset that sets me apart from others.

What are your plans for the future?
I wont spoil any future surprises. I will say to pay attention, support and share what I have done, will do and currently am doing. The biggest changes will be seen through my relationship with content and social media. I am looking forward to how my music, projects and my way of being will influence the world. It’s always exciting to see how differently things like music can be interpreted despite the initial intent. That is one of the most fascinating variables that I really enjoy about music.
