Inspiring Conversations with Suly Guzman of Suly’s Tax Firm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suly Guzman.

Hi Suly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
First and foremost, I am a wife, mother, and grandmother. My family is the center of my world, and everything I do professionally is ultimately about creating a life that allows me to spend meaningful time with the people I love most.

Much of who I am today comes from the example set by my parents. They worked tirelessly well into their 70s and taught me that success isn’t just about what you achieve—it’s about honesty, treating people well, and always following through on your commitments. I spent more than 30 years learning from them, and I wouldn’t have had the confidence to start this business again without the foundation they instilled in me.

My journey in the tax industry began in 1992 when I joined my parents’ tax practice. What started as an opportunity to learn the family business quickly became a lifelong career. Over the years, I realized that taxes are about much more than numbers. Behind every return is a person, a family, or a business owner working hard to build a better future, and I genuinely enjoy helping people understand something that often feels overwhelming.

For more than 30 years, I worked alongside my parents, helping grow and operate our family business. In 2023, we sold the company so they could retire and enjoy the next chapter of their lives after decades of hard work. After spending so many years in the industry, I decided to take a step back, recharge, and spend more time with my family.

During that time, I realized how much I missed working with clients and being part of their journey. I founded Suly’s Tax Firm in 2023 but intentionally waited until the end of 2025 to officially open the doors. I wanted the opportunity to create something different from the traditional tax office—a space where clients could walk in and immediately feel comfortable and relaxed. Taxes can be stressful; I wanted an environment where people never feel rushed or intimidated.

I also couldn’t do it without the support of my husband and daughter. During tax season, my husband makes sure I eat, get enough sleep, and takes care of everything at home so I can focus on my clients. My daughter is my right hand in the office and handles countless details behind the scenes. Suly’s Tax Firm may have my name on the door, but it’s very much a family effort.

Today, after more than 30 years in the profession, I still enjoy solving problems, simplifying complicated tax situations, and helping individuals, families, and small business owners feel more confident and informed. Looking back, I realize that everything I’ve built is rooted in the values my parents taught me, strengthened by the support of my family, and driven by the relationships I’ve been fortunate enough to build with my clients over the years.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like many business owners, I’ve navigated economic recessions, constantly changing tax laws, and the uncertainty that came with the COVID pandemic. Every challenge taught me the importance of adaptability, perseverance, and maintaining a positive outlook.

One challenge people don’t often see is the demanding nature of the tax profession itself. Tax season requires extremely long hours and often working six or seven days a week. After many years of maintaining that pace, I recognized the importance of balance. When we sold our family business in 2023, I chose to step away from the tax and accounting industry for two years to recharge, refocus, and spend more time with my family.

One of the biggest challenges tax preparers face is managing expectations during tax season. Clients either expect a big refund or not to pay any tax liabilities. People compare their refunds with friends or family and tend to expect the same or more, but the reality is that no two tax returns are exactly alike. Income, tax withholding, deductions, credits, investments, and many other factors all affect the final result. Explaining that to someone who is frustrated or disappointed can be challenging. I believe, though, that part of my job is education. I want my clients to understand why they owe taxes or why their refund changed instead of simply accepting a number without an explanation.

Another challenge has been adapting to a much more competitive industry than when I started in 1992. Technology, online tax services, and increased competition have significantly changed the landscape. Rather than seeing these changes as obstacles, I focus on what technology cannot replace: taking the time to answer questions, explaining the process clearly, and building relationships with the people I serve.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Suly’s Tax Firm is a full-service tax, accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, and small business support firm. I work with individuals, self-employed professionals, startups, and established businesses. In addition to tax preparation, my services include business formation, translation services, notary, and guidance for entrepreneurs who are just beginning their business journey.

What truly sets me apart is the amount of time and attention I dedicate to each client. I believe people should fully understand what they are signing. Too often, tax returns are prepared quickly, signed without explanation, and clients leave feeling like just a number. I take the time to review every return, explain things in simple terms, and answer as many questions as needed so clients feel confident and informed.

I am particularly passionate about helping small business owners. Starting a business can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. Many entrepreneurs are experts in their trade but are unsure how to manage bookkeeping, taxes, or financial records. I enjoy taking the time to learn about their business, understand their goals, and help them create systems that keep them organized from the start. My goal is to take the accounting and bookkeeping burden off their shoulders as much as possible so they can focus on what they do best—running and growing their business while avoiding costly mistakes and penalties.

While my office is located in Utah, I prepare tax returns for clients throughout the United States and work with individuals and business owners in many states. Over the years, my client base has expanded beyond state lines and even beyond U.S. borders. I currently have clients living and working internationally, including two in Asia and a few that send me their tax information from South America. Regardless of where my clients are located, my goal remains the same: to provide personalized service, help them navigate complex tax situations, and ensure they remain compliant with federal and state tax requirements. Preparing returns for clients in different states and countries has allowed me to develop a broad understanding of a wide variety of tax situations and financial circumstances.

Accessibility is also important to me. As a Hispanic business owner who is bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish, I have the opportunity to serve a diverse community and ensure clients feel comfortable discussing their tax matters in the language they prefer. Clear communication helps build trust and allows better support of my clients’ needs.

At its core, Suly’s Tax Firm is built on relationships, education, transparency, and trust. My goal has never been to be the largest firm. My goal is to be the firm that people feel comfortable calling when they have questions and the firm that treats every client like they matter—because they do. Every client has a unique story, unique goals, and unique challenges.

Over the years, I’ve watched clients get married, start businesses, have children, retire, and even send their own adult children to me for tax preparation. I’ve been fortunate to watch many of them reach important milestones, and those long-term relationships are one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?

As a small business owner, I understand firsthand how much it means when someone chooses to trust and support your business. I never take that trust for granted, and I do my best to make sure every client feels informed, respected, and well taken care of. After more than 30 years in this profession, I still enjoy getting to know my clients, answering their questions, and helping them through tax season. I truly believe that when small businesses succeed and families have someone they can rely on, our entire community becomes stronger.
