Today we’d like to introduce you to Sky Chaney.
Hi Sky, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
VillageLight.org is a nonprofit international aid organization that serves remote villages in the highest mountains in the world. Our effort started 10 years ago when our team was trekking in Nepal. We noticed so many mountain people struggling to survive and decided to do we can do the help. We start by bringing warm clothing and reading glasses with us into the Himalayas. Since then our organization has expanded include projects to provide food to hungry people, seeds and greenhouses for gardens, medicine for small clinics, stoves and plumbing for a school, solar lights, and emergency funding for people in crisis situations.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest challenges we face is how to transport food, clothing, and other supplies to the remote villages we serve. Often this involves hauling items by truck or bus from Kathmandu, then 4-wheel drive jeep transport up into the mountains, then loading the items onto mules or the backs of porters to be carried for several days up into the high elevation valleys where mountain people live.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Village Light?
We have a wonderful economic development project that you can participate in. Women in the valley of Sama weave beautiful handmade Tibetan rugs made of Himalayan sheep and yak wool. These are colorful, soft, and exquisite expressions of a centuries old artform. You can have one of these beautiful rugs in your home while benefiting the lives of families that will greatly appreciate your support. See these exquisite and rare rugs at HimalayanMountainRugs.com . Also, please sign up for our occasional Village Light email update.
