Rising Stars: Meet Jessica McAllister of Utah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica McAllister.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My introduction into the event industry started in 2015 when my friend needed someone to perform along with her at a wedding. The harp and violin make a stunning duo, so I readily agreed. Even though I had played the violin for decades at that point (including studying music education at college), it had never occurred to me to offer my services at events.

The wedding was a smash hit and I was hooked. Unfortunately, we only played a couple of weddings together before she moved to another state and I was certain no one would want to hire a solo violinist for any type of event.

I’ve never been more happy to be proven wrong!

Fortunately, business has been steadily growing since then. While the majority of my events are weddings, I also enjoy when I am able to play for corporate events, birthday parties, proposals, and everything in between. There is something magical about the sound of a live solo violin, and it is my honor to help provide memorable moments for my clients!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When covid-19 threw a huge monkey wrench into the wedding industry in 2020, I was able to pivot from providing music for the larger, grander weddings to providing music for small elopement weddings. It was such an interesting time; and in some ways I look back to that period with fondness. While I love playing for the large groups of smiling family and friends, there is something to be said for the quiet intimacy associated with an elopement of just a few close loved ones. Love always finds a way, after all!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a top-ranked solo violinist based out of Salt Lake County, Utah. When I first picked up a violin at age 10, I knew the violin was always going to be a part of my life. I like to joke that it picked me; I didn’t pick it. Fast forward 28 years, and now I have made my dream job my reality – bringing beautiful music to various events across the state!

One of my favorite aspects of this job is being able to learn new songs that mean something special to each client. I love seeing their face light up when they hear it for the first time! Music can touch the heart in ways words never can, and I never take that for granted.

I’m best known for my extensive repertoire of pieces (I adore learning new cover songs, especially those no one expects to hear on the violin), my prompt communication (it’s hard enough to plan an event without waiting around for vendor replies, am-I-right?!), and my ability to bring the piece of music to life (there is a difference between being able to play the right notes and actually performing the piece, after all).

Another perk that comes from hiring someone who has worked in the event industry for over 10 years is that there isn’t a hiccup I haven’t already dealt with. The FOB spilled something on his tuxedo, the ceremony start time is delayed and you need 20+ extra minutes of prelude music? Don’t stress! I’ve got you. Mother Nature decided to suddenly kick up the wind during your outdoor birthday party? Anticipated and accounted for.

Having a calm and collected musician on your side can make all the difference to your event!

How do you define success?
Success is never giving up, even when other’s tell you it isn’t possible. Success is being able to look yourself in the eye at the end of a busy day, knowing you gave it your best.
