Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Sivils.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my cosmetology journey in summer of 2015 right after I graduated high school. I attended Hairitage Hair Academy until my graduation in 2016. Through the peaks and valleys of hair school you will learn how to become a survivor. From your first haircut to your last time clocking out it’s always an adventure.
I started in a small chain salon after I graduated trying to figure out how to navigate what my future in cosmetology and barbering was going to look like. I finally came to my final destination working alongside my Aunt at Ellsie Lane Esthetics. I own Jen Nicole Beauty and have now been doing hair for 10 years. It has been the best adventure so far but it has also been a big life lesson on how powerful loving yourself can be.
A little 19 year old girls dream has come to fruition and here she is 10 years later. Living the dream.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If you think taking your state boards can be a little nerve-racking, I’d have to disagree. I feel like the hardest part of my career was building my clientele. Finding people who fit your wants as a client, but also there needs as your client. I was once told that the people who need you most will come to you when you least expect it. 10 years later, I truly believe that.
It took me 5 years to have a solid clientele. I am talking full books! If there was two of me, it wouldn’t even be enough still. What a blessing. It is to have the people in my life that I do who support me in my dream every day.
Finding your niche within the trade is very hard. Sometimes you have to try everything before you figure out what really fits you best service wise. You might do 10 perms before you figure out that’s not your thing or you might try Baby highlights for the first time and figure out hey this isn’t working, but you still do it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in color and extensions. I got certified about a year ago for extensions and it has been so fun! It’s a learning curve when you first start, but I’m very proud of my progress. You really never know if you like something until you try it.
One thing I love about color is the customization. Each client comes in with a canvas and they all want something different. It’s very fitting that I am a creative person because every time someone comes in I’m able to make a masterpiece with their hair. It’s such a special part of my job.
One thing that sets me apart from other stylist is that I am patient but I listen. When I say I listen, I mean I really listen to my clients. Not only are they coming in for a service but usually it’s a therapy appointment too. They want to be seen and heard and that is something I can do. I take my time to curate their service and set realistic expectations while also providing a great service.
Southern Utah is a saturated area for cosmetology as well as barbering so the fact that I have a full clientele gives me a piece of mind. I’m very proud of my progress and my push and my will to keep going even on the hard days. Not every day is easy in this industry, there’s a lot of competition and you need to be true to you every day. You are the best you and there’s only one of you so you are enough.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
This job is all about taking risks. Waking up in the morning and doing a consultation is a risk. Doing a color is a risk. Doing a perm is a risk.
You never know what your day is going to look like unless you book those appointments. I always think about it as risk versus reward. It might be a risk, but the reward after is always greater.
If you’re not jumping in to your trade every day and just going with the flow, you won’t grow. Trying new techniques, taking classes, creating curated formulas, bringing all your knowledge to the salon. It’s all part of growing. I would take the risk again. Not knowing if I was going to succeed, I would still do it over again the same way. I wouldn’t be where I am if I didn’t.
