Today we’d like to introduce you to Sadie Joy Muhlestein.
Hi Sadie Joy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always been a more quiet and reclusive person, even as a kid. Art really allowed me to express myself and fully put myself into the world in a way that felt liberating and honest. My mother is an artist and really cultivated that outlet for me growing up. She’d encourage projects and expose me to artists which really fed my love and dedication to art. Everything felt possible in the world of art. When I became a mother I wanted there to be an emphasis for art with my daughters. It has been an incredible point of bonding with my girls. It’s a kind of language we speak together and it brings so much joy into the world. They are incredible artists in their own medium, they inspire me daily. Its amazing to see how artist expressing themselves can be as unique as fingerprints for each person. How personal perspectives and concepts of the world translated through art can help each of us see the world in more nuanced and thoughtful way. I have had little love affairs between different mediums but ultimately found my forever love in ceramics. I can spend hours completely enraptured in projects. I love the different elements and alchemy of what ceramics offers. It’s always a surprise and the learning curve is ever present. I draw most of my inspiration from the natural world, places I’ve been and things I’ve seen and from stories and mythology.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a ceramist is full of surprises. You think you are familiar with a clay body or glaze combination and something can unexpectedly happen and throw you off your confidence. It’s one of the many reasons I absolutely love this medium. You can’t be too attached to perfection. There are too many variables and unexpected obstacles. You just have to roll with it and enjoy the journey. It’s a life lesson wrapped in an art expression. It’s absolutely wonderful and challenging and full of discovery.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I began mainly as a watercolorist who focused primarily on illustration. When I started ceramics I think my illustrations translated onto clay in a kind of kismet way. My love of color and whimsy work well on clay and I think my style is recognizable on the market.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Ceramics is a kind of functional art that has been around for ages. It’s a medium that is more justifiable in acquiring mainly because it serves two functions beauty and use. I don’t think the love of ceramics is waning anytime soon. I think pottery has solidified its way into the hearts of art collectors and coffee and tea drinkers forever.
