Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Mills.
Adam, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My path into coaching was born out of a mix of competitive drive and a deep fascination with human performance. As a competitive cyclist with a background in exercise physiology—holding a Master’s degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas—I kept noticing a glaring gap in the endurance sports world. A lot of athletes were relying on outdated advice, guesswork, or rigid, one-size-fits-all training templates. It was so irritating!
I wanted to change that. I joined Source Endurance to bring real, data-driven exercise science out of the lab and straight onto the roads, trails, and gravel. My goal was simple: take the scientific rigor usually reserved for top-tier Olympic programs and make it accessible and practical for everyday endurance athletes who want real results.
In the beginning, I purchased Source Endurance and it was just me working one-on-one with a small group of local cyclists and endurance athletes. My focus was on custom training design, deep power data analysis, and understanding metabolic performance.
Word started spreading. Athletes weren’t just getting faster; they were riding stronger, recovering better, and avoiding the all-too-common trap of overtraining and burnout. As the demand grew beyond our local cycling scene to include gravel riders, mountain bikers, triathletes, and ultra-distance runners, I realized Source Endurance needed to grow, too. I began carefully bringing on a team of incredible coaches who shared the same core values: a commitment to evidence-based training, continuous learning, and genuine athlete support.
Over the years, the landscape of endurance sports has shifted dramatically. Eating finally became popular, Power meters became standard, HRV tracking emerged, and performance analytics blew wide open. From day one, I made sure Source Endurance stayed on the cutting edge of these training technologies.
But technology is only half the equation. As we grew, I fought hard to keep the human element at the front and center of everything we do. Algorithms don’t know when an athlete is stressed at work or having an off day; real coaching requires communication, empathy, and constant adaptation. We expanded our offerings beyond traditional 1-on-1 coaching to include metabolic testing, event-specific prep for major gravel and road races, and camps to help athletes understand what training should look like and why.
Today, Source Endurance has grown into a coaching collective that I’m incredibly proud of. We’ve had the privilege of guiding athletes to national championship podiums, personal records, and major lifestyle transformations.
Even as the business has grown, my personal philosophy hasn’t changed since day one: blend cutting-edge science with dedicated mentorship to help every athlete find out just how capable they really are.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No successful business has a smooth road. Early on, my biggest struggle was navigating the shift from being an exercise physiologist who just loved coaching into running an actual business. In the beginning, I was handling every single detail myself, from client intake and training plans to marketing and admin. Learning how to delegate, step back, and find coaches who held that same high standard for evidence-based training—and then trusting them with athletes —was a massive hurdle to overcome. It was also 100% necessary.
As the endurance sports landscape evolved, we faced a whole new challenge with the sudden explosion of training technology. In the last 10 years athletes were inundated with power meters, heart rate variability trackers, continuous glucose monitors, and low-cost, algorithm-driven training apps. The struggle wasn’t just keeping up with the technology; it was filtering through all the noise. We had to work hard to educate athletes on why raw data and AI templates can’t replace dynamic human coaching, constantly demonstrating the true value of personalized, empathetic mentorship. On top of that, learning how to bridge pure exercise science with real-world chaos took time. Early on, I leaned heavily into what looked physiologically perfect on paper, but I quickly learned that real athletes have full-time jobs, families, bad sleep, and unexpected stress. Adapting rigid lab data into flexible human training was a crucial shift in my growth as a coach.
Then, when the pandemic hit in 2020 and the racing world froze overnight, we had to completely redefine what training meant when all the finish lines disappeared. We pivoted hard to keep athletes grounded, shifting our focus to long-term physiological development, mental health, and personal adventure goals. None of these obstacles were easy, but every single bumpy stretch forced us to adapt, sharpen our methodology, and build a far stronger foundation than we started with.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Source Endurance, we are an endurance performance coaching group dedicated to helping athletes—from beginners tackling their first gran fondo to elite competitors racing for national championships—reach their peak potential. Our core specialization lies in data-driven, highly individualized endurance coaching and performance management. While our roots are deeply anchored in cycling across road, gravel, mountain biking, cyclocross, track, and e-racing, our scientific methodologies extend across running, multisport, and ultra-endurance disciplines. Our offerings range from dynamic one-on-one custom coaching and sports nutrition consulting to specialized event prep for iconic races and advanced physiological testing, including metabolic and power-duration analysis.
What sets us apart is the way we blend high-level academic rigor with genuine human connection. Every single coach on our roster holds a background backed by formal degrees in exercise science, kinesiology, or physiology, combined with extensive real-world racing experience. In an era increasingly dominated by generic AI training apps and static templates, we refuse to treat athletes like spreadsheets. We constantly adjust training around real-life variables like work stress, travel, family commitments, and poor sleep, ensuring our athletes achieve long-term progress and consistency without falling into the trap of overtraining or burnout.
Brand-wise, we are most proud of our proven track record of results paired with true athlete longevity. Over the years, our coaches have guided athletes to over four dozen national championship titles and sent many athletes to college on cycling scholarships, but we take equal pride in the hundreds of time-crunched, everyday athletes who have shattered personal records, conquered brutal bucket-list events, and rebuilt a healthier relationship with endurance sports. What we want readers to know above all else is that you don’t need to be a professional to train with scientific precision. Whether your goal is a podium spot or simply crossing the finish line confident and prepared, we bring the exact same rigor, respect, and evidence-based methodology to your journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
The things that make me the most happy as a professional is seeing the progression of each athlete and watching their success. Whether it’s a national championship, personal best, or simply making it to the start line. We all have our battles and winning takes a different form for all of us.
