Today we’d like to introduce you to James B.
James, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Like a lot of people, I didn’t set out to become a content creator. On paper I’m probably the last person you’d assume that would be reviewing, recommending and rating romance books. Originally from Alabama, Im a medically retired Army Cavalry Scout with combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. After leaving the military, I worked in operations management and construction before deciding to take a chance on creating content full-time.
What started as a joke, turned into something I never expected. After launching the series “Reviewing the books I found on my wife’s Kindle by accident” I realized there was a huge community of readers who loved seeing someone completely outside the romance world react honestly to the wild stories they were reading. My catchphrase, “That’s not romance, that’s a felony,” kind of took on a life of its own.
Today, millions of people have watched those reviews across social media, and I’ve been fortunate enough to build an incredible community of readers, authors, narrators, and fellow creators. One of the most rewarding parts has been helping independent authors reach new audiences and watching books I’ve talked about climb the charts. It’s also opened the door to speaking at book conventions, collaborating with brands, and supporting organizations like Survivors Power, a nonprofit that provides mental health scholarships for survivors of sexual assault.
What I enjoy most is making people laugh. Whether someone is a lifelong romance reader or has never picked up one of these books, I want them to leave smiling. The community that’s grown around Bored Trophy Husband has been incredibly welcoming, and I’m excited to see where this unexpected journey leads next
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road, but I also don’t like living with a “woe is me” mentality. My wife and I met while serving in Afghanistan, and after my military service I was medically retired due to injuries I sustained, including a traumatic brain injury and PTSD. Like many veterans, that meant figuring out what came next.
Since then, we’ve followed my wife’s career across the country, living in more than a dozen states over the past 15 years. Constant moves, career changes, and starting over again and again taught us to be adaptable and to find opportunities in change rather than resent it.
Looking back, those experiences are probably what gave me the confidence to take a chance on content creation. If you’ve learned to rebuild your life a few times, starting a IG, Facebook or TikTok channel doesn’t seem nearly as intimidating. Every challenge has ultimately led us somewhere better, and that’s the mindset I try to bring to everything I do.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a content creator and comedian best known as “Bored Trophy Husband,” where I create comedic reviews of romance books I accidentally discovered on my wife’s Kindle. My content is built around the perspective of someone who had never read romance before, reacting to the stories in real time with humor, genuine surprise, and a lot of confusion.
What started as a joke has grown into a community of millions of readers and viewers across social media. Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to work with publishers, authors, and brands while speaking at book conventions and creating content that introduces new readers to books they may have never picked up otherwise.
What sets me apart is authenticity. I don’t script reactions or pretend to know the genre better than the people who have loved it for years. I’m simply a husband sharing his honest reactions, and I think people connect with that because it feels genuine. My goal has never been to criticize the books, it’s to celebrate the creativity of authors while making people laugh.
The thing I’m most proud of isn’t the follower count or the viral videos. It’s hearing from readers who tell me I helped them discover a new favorite author or from independent authors who saw their books reach thousands of new readers or hitting the bestsellers list after one of my reviews. Building a community where people can laugh together, celebrate books, and support authors has been far more rewarding than I ever imagined
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that authenticity will take you further than trying to fit into someone else’s expectations. I never set out to become a bookish creator, and I definitely never imagined that reading romance novels would become my career. I simply made the kind of videos that made me laugh and hoped other people would enjoy them too.
