Inspiring Conversations with Breona Wilson of Afro Delights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Breona Wilson.

Hi breona, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My bakery journey actually started at church. I began bringing homemade treats to share, and before long, it became something people looked forward to every week. Baking quickly became something I was known for within my church community, and eventually, a friend encouraged me to take it a step further and open my own bakery.

What I didn’t realize at the time was how much baking would begin to change me personally. As a survivor of sexual abuse, I found that baking became an important part of my healing journey. It gave me something positive to pour myself into and helped me become more active and engaged, both mentally and emotionally. Creating something with my own hands and then watching it bring happiness to someone else gave baking a meaning in my life that went far beyond food.

When someone first suggested opening a bakery, the idea surprised me, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. I decided to take that chance, and what started with simply bringing treats to church eventually grew into the bakery I have today.

Since then, I’ve gone from baking for my church community to selling at farmers markets, where we now regularly sell out, creating custom cakes, and building a menu around some of our Southern-inspired favorites, including our honey butter and signature Southern honey cornbread. What began as a small act of sharing has grown into both a business I’m incredibly proud of and something that has played a meaningful role in my own story of healing and growth.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely! Like any career, running a bakery comes with challenges. There are days when frosting doesn’t turn out right, bread doesn’t bake as planned, or a dessert simply doesn’t come together the way I envisioned.

But I’ve learned to see those moments as opportunities to grow rather than failures. Every challenge has taught me something new, strengthened my skills, and motivated me to keep learning and becoming a better baker.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Afro Delights is a Southern-inspired bakery built around comfort, culture, and creating food that brings people together. We’re especially known for our signature Southern honey cornbread and homemade honey butter, which have become some of our most popular items at local farmers markets. We also offer custom cakes, desserts, and other baked goods for special occasions and events.

What sets Afro Delights apart is the story behind the brand. As a survivor of sexual abuse, baking became part of my healing journey and eventually grew into a way for me to create something positive that could be shared with others. I wanted to build a bakery that represented resilience, warmth, and the comfort that good Southern food can bring.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that something that began as a personal outlet has grown into a business that people genuinely recognize and support. Seeing customers love our baked goods at farmers markets and watching the business continue to grow has been incredibly rewarding. I want people to know that when they support Afro Delights, they’re supporting a small local business with a lot of heart behind every recipe.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think what surprises most people is why I started baking and what continues to motivate me. Many bakeries begin with a beloved family recipe or a tradition passed down through generations, but my story began differently. As a survivor of sexual abuse, baking became a healing outlet for me during a difficult chapter of my life. It gave me a place to channel my emotions, express my creativity, and turn something painful into something positive. What began as part of my healing journey eventually became something that genuinely brought me happiness, and today, I get to bring that creativity to life through Afro Delights and share it with others.
