Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Eggertsen Cooke.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began playing piano when I was in elementary school, and as I grew up, I fell in love with singer pianist, Elton John, Carole King, Melissa Manchester, Laura Nero, and my dad was a huge fan of Frank Sinatra and Willie Nelson Marty Robbins. When I got into high school I started the company Ing myself on the piano and singing, and I got a gig at a French restaurant in town on the weekend for tips and dinner and I played every Friday and Saturday for a couple of years and I loved It when I went to college I was in rock band and I played keyboards and sync back up and leads and continue to play solo, but then things in my life changed and I stopped performing and playing piano and singing for about 12 years and I raced mountain bikes, and road bikes, professionally during that time,then decided to pick it back up again and ever since then I’ve been going strong playing and singing all over Park city some places in Salt Lake City and I did a part-time in residency at the Metropolitan room in New York City did 10 years of Cabaret shows also at the triad Theatre and don’t tell mama in New York City. I also did several shows at the Gardenia restaurant and lounge in Santa Monica, California.
My plan is to continue to sing and play piano travel to both coasts. I’m thinking about hiring an agency to book me have a bunch of venues that I’m very interested in and hopefully that is a success in my free time I coach mountain biking and cross-country skiing just kids I’ve been doing that for 25 years
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The struggles are mostly that it’s very difficult to get venues to respond to inquiries. If you don’t have an agent i.e. unsolicited getting booked can be really challenging. I know it doesn’t happen for other people sometimes it seems like it’s super easy for them but for me, it’s been a challenging road.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in interpreting music, I love jazz and standards, but I also love 6070s. I guess the decades and the different styles from the decades I just play the song the way I hear it in my head. I don’t try to cover people I don’t try to sound like them and I also started writing music a few years ago. I have one album. And I was inspired to write these songs from shows I did in New York City and people I met there. I have a lot of ideas in my head that I haven’t put them down on paper yet I think that I’m a better singer than I’m a piano player, I would like to be a better piano player. I hear really good jazz pianist and I’m such a rookie compared to them. My favorite thing to do is play in a lounge the piano and people just visiting having drinks dinner. I don’t mind stage presentations, but I really love the intimate small lounge venue.
