Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabby Olsen.
Hi Gabby, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Gabby Olsen’s roots in Utah’s outdoors run deep. Growing up in Salt Lake City where she started rock climbing at 17, she has spent most her life exploring the outdoors. Today, she stands out in Southern Utah’s outdoor industry as the owner of Rock Odysseys—the only woman-owned rock climbing and canyoneering guide service in the Zion National Park region.
Olsen’s path to business ownership was built on a foundation of education and hands-on experience. After high school, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism with a focus on sustainable tourism from the University of Utah. In 2016, she joined Rock Odysseys as a certified instructor. Her dedication over the next five years culminated in her taking over ownership in 2021, growing the business into a premier adventure outfit.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Learning the ins and outs of running a business on the backend- digital marketing, website development, SEO, accounting, etc. I have enjoyed the challenges throughout as it is a business that is my whole heart so investing my time into it does not always feel like a “job that I just need to show up for”, I want to show up everyday for Rock Odysseys, our guides and our clients.
We’ve been impressed with Rock Odysseys, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Rock Odysseys is a Zion National Park Guide Service. We were established in 2013 and we are proudly one of the only woman owned and operated guide services in the USA! At Rock Odysseys, we specialize in Adventure Rock Trips including Climbing, Canyoneering/Rappelling, and Combo Trips; as well as an exclusive Kids’ Program, The Rock Hoppers.
As a small company focused on customer service and quality, rather than quantity, we employ only a few of the best climbers and guides in the area. Our hope is to empower and inspire every participant regardless of range of abilities, age, gender, background or experience levels.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
We have guided ages as young as 2 years old and as old as early 80s!
