Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Olson.
Hi Taylor, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started pursuing art as a career back when I went to Southern Utah Univeristy around 2016. I ended up dropping out to start tattooing the following year and later on I moved from Cedar City to Salt Lake City to work for 27 Tattoo. Working there helped me grow immensely as an artist and build connections in the community. I owe my success to the many people Ive met along the way and my wonderful clients. Nearly 10 years later, I now own a small tattoo shop in St George Utah called Desert Ghoul Tattoos.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Navigating motherhood for the first time was a big challenge in my career and life in general. I spent six years dedicating myself to my craft, working nearly every day of the week and drawing constantly. To go from that to raising another human was life changing. I felt like I lost myself and for the next couple years I only worked three days a week so that I could be with my son. A sacrifice I would make a million times over but difficult nonetheless. Im happy to be on the road I am today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a tattoo artist and I specialize in black and gray illustrative and ornamental designs with some japanese pieces sprinkled in. My art grows with me so Im sure that will change little by little over time. I also create other works outside of tattooing. Mostly bright illustrative drawings inspired by futuristic worlds and cyborg components.
I say what sets me apart is my love for the craft. Tattooing is my passion, what I reach for when Im sad, how I celebrate when Im happy. Art is my light in a dark room.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I live in St George Utah and this place is BEAUTIFUL. The red rocks have my heart. I also love seeing the growth over the years. Its a city with small town vibes which I love but that also comes with a price. There is still a ton of discrimination and judgment from people here which can make it difficult to navigate and create those communities we desperately need.
