Today we’d like to introduce you to Rupali Munot.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey with henna began when I was a little girl growing up in a small village in India. I was always fascinated by visual arts, especially henna, which has such a rich and beautiful presence in Indian culture. During weddings, festivals, and family celebrations, I would watch henna artists create intricate patterns with remarkable grace and precision. I could sit for hours, completely captivated by the delicate movements of their hands. I wanted to learn this art myself, but there was no one in my village to teach me, so I began practicing on my cousins and friends.
As I grew older, my love for art and design led me to pursue architecture. After I graduated from high school, my loving and supportive parents moved our family to a bigger city so I could follow my dreams. During college, I met my soulmate, Shailesh. When he was accepted into the master’s program in architecture at the University of Utah, I followed him halfway around the world to begin a new chapter of our lives.
Moving to a new country brought many changes. I built a family, and Shailesh and I were blessed with two wonderful boys, Ved and Vivan. Although life took me in a different direction, my love for henna never faded.
One day, I decided to share my henna designs with a close friend, Alice, who also had a passion for art. She saw something special in my work and encouraged me to share it with others. With her encouragement, I took a leap of faith and started offering henna at a local farmers market. I remember wondering whether anyone would stop by my booth or be interested in an art form that was still relatively unfamiliar to many people in the community. To my delight, people were genuinely excited about henna! They were curious about the designs, the traditions behind them, and the experience itself. What began as a way to share something I loved soon became something much more meaningful. Through henna, I found a new way to connect with the people of Salt Lake City and share a beautiful part of my heritage with my adopted community.
That experience helped me understand why henna has endured for thousands of years. It is so much more than beautiful designs on the skin. Henna is a tradition, a form of artistic expression, and a way of bringing people together. Each design is created through a personal interaction between the artist and the person receiving it. In that moment, there is a special connection—one that transcends cultures, backgrounds, and languages. That is the heart of Rupali’s Henna Art. What began with a little girl’s fascination in a small Indian village has grown into a way for me to share my culture, my creativity, and a little bit of joy with the community I now call home.
I took so much pride in spreading my culture and artwork with my clients. My husband, who has always been my greatest support, helped me put together a business. He created a website, business cards, and built a social media presence. I focused on giving my best artwork and wining my clients’ hearts! I became a permanent vendor at Downton Farmers Market, Utah Arts Festival, Living Traditions, and many more big events in Salt Lake City. I am fortunate to be able to serve many local and destination weddings for bridal henna throughout the state of Utah.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road, but the challenges along the way helped me grow both as an artist and as a business owner.
When I first started, henna was relatively unfamiliar to many people in the community, so building trust and helping people understand this beautiful art form took time. Language was another challenge. As someone who had moved to a new country, I sometimes felt intimidated about communicating with customers and explaining the traditions and meaning behind my art. Over time, those interactions helped me become more confident and comfortable connecting with people from different backgrounds.
I also experienced a bit of a cultural learning curve. In India, henna is traditionally associated with the palms and hands, especially during weddings, festivals, and celebrations. Here in the United States, many clients wanted designs on their shoulders, necks, ankles, and other parts of the body, often as a temporary tattoo. That was quite different from what I had grown up with, and it took some time to understand these new preferences while staying true to my artistic roots.
Looking back, these challenges taught me to be open-minded, adaptable, and patient. I learned that sharing an art form across cultures is not just about introducing people to something new; it is also about listening, learning, and finding common ground. Those experiences helped me build meaningful relationships with my customers and made the journey of growing Rupali’s Henna Art even more rewarding.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a professional henna artist with more than 30 years of experience creating authentic Indian henna designs. For the past 24 years, I have had the joy of sharing my art with the Salt Lake City community, bringing a beautiful Indian tradition to people from many different backgrounds.
I specialize in traditional Indian and Arabic henna designs for a wide variety of occasions, including weddings, bridal showers, Mehndi nights, sangeet celebrations, birthday parties, private gatherings, and community events. My work is known for its intricate details, creativity, and versatility. I enjoy creating everything from small, elegant Arabic designs to elaborate traditional patterns covering the hands and feet. Every design is unique, and I love customizing my work to reflect each client’s personal style, preferences, and the occasion they are celebrating.
What I am most proud of is being able to share a tradition that has been part of my life since childhood with the community I now call home. Over the years, I have had the privilege of introducing many people to henna, celebrating important milestones with families, and helping bring people together through art. Knowing that something I love so deeply can create happiness and connections across cultures is the most rewarding part of what I do. One thing I take great pride in is the quality and authenticity of my henna. I prepare my own henna paste using 100% natural henna powder imported from India, blended with eucalyptus oil, lemon, and sugar water. That’s it—no added chemicals, artificial colors, or other additives. I take great care in preparing my henna, paying attention to the ingredients and the process to create a paste that honors the traditional art I have practiced for more than 30 years. For me, using natural ingredients is an essential part of preserving the authenticity of henna and providing my clients with an experience they can feel good about.
What sets me apart is the combination of experience, cultural heritage, attention to detail, and personal connection I bring to every design. Henna is not simply about creating beautiful patterns; it is about creating a meaningful experience. I enjoy listening to my clients, understanding their preferences, and bringing their ideas to life through art.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, I hope to continue growing Rupali’s Henna Art by sharing my passion with more people and introducing this beautiful tradition to younger generations. I would love to teach others the art of henna, pass along the techniques I have learned, and help keep this special cultural tradition alive for years to come.
I also look forward to being part of more weddings, bridal celebrations, and larger community events, where I can share my art with more people and help make their special occasions even more memorable. Every event brings an opportunity to connect with new people, celebrate meaningful moments, and create something unique.
Ultimately, my goal is to continue doing what I love while reaching more people through my art. If I can inspire the next generation of henna artists while continuing to bring joy to families and celebrations throughout Utah, that would be a truly rewarding next chapter for me
