Exploring Life & Business with McKay Prince of Hyperpeak Remodeling

Today we’d like to introduce you to McKay Prince.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up all over the place. I was born in Richfield, spent my early childhood in Arizona, and moved to Toquerville when I was 14, so Southern Utah is home.

After high school I served a full-time mission for my church in Santiago, Chile. I came home speaking Spanish, which turned out to be more useful than I expected. I worked odd jobs while going to UVU, then got hired by a commercial plumbing company in Salt Lake as a translator and laborer.

From there I spent a couple of years as an assistant superintendent for a custom home builder in Park City. That’s where I learned how bigger residential projects actually run: scheduling a dozen trades, keeping subcontractors accountable, catching problems before they become expensive ones, and keeping a job moving when something inevitably goes sideways. It was the best training I could have asked for.

Around that same time, in 2020, my wife and I bought our first duplex in Salt Lake and remodeled it ourselves. I loved every part of it. Taking something tired and turning it into something people actually want to live in just clicked for me.

In 2022 we had our first child, and I wanted to increase my income and be a better provider for my family. That led me to door-to-door pest control sales in San Antonio. I made good money, and it taught me a lot about talking to people and hearing “no,” but I didn’t love the work.

Starting Hyperpeak in 2023 was the best of both worlds. I got to do the work I actually love, with the income potential of running my own business. My first big job came from Google: a homeowner in St. George whose house had been broken into and vandalized, and she needed the whole thing put back together. I did a decent portion of that remodel myself, hauling materials in my parents’ white van because I couldn’t afford a work truck yet. For a while I took everything, from full remodels down to small handyman jobs.

Things changed when I stopped thinking of it as working for myself and started thinking about building a business. That’s when we moved to a design-build model. I’m not an interior designer and I’ve never pretended to be. Bringing designers and drafters in from the start gives clients a better result and a much smoother experience, and it lets me focus on what I’m good at: explaining the process, keeping people in the loop, and helping them get the most out of their budget.

Today we’ve completed over 60 remodels across Washington County, with offices in St. George and La Verkin. I still try to make every client laugh at least once. Remodeling is stressful enough.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not even close. Money management doesn’t come naturally to me, and in 2024 that caught up with me. One of our projects went way over budget, and I ended up in the red on it. That put me behind on cash flow, and every job after that was spent playing catch-up. It’s a cycle that’s really hard to get out of once you’re in it.

During that same stretch, my wife and I lost our two-month-old daughter, Penny. It was the lowest point of my life. For a while I was carrying both of those things, and I didn’t tell my wife how bad the business side had gotten.

When I finally did, everything changed. We worked through it as a team: grieving Penny together, and fixing the business together. My wife is great with money, and within a few months she helped get Hyperpeak back in the green.

We’ve stayed there since, because we put real non-negotiables in place. Every client’s money goes to their project and nothing else. We job cost every single day and review every project budget at least once a week. We’re on our clients’ budgets like white on rice.

Looking back, that season made Hyperpeak a better company. Clients get a more trustworthy experience, and we’re building something sustainable that supports our family for the long haul.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Hyperpeak Remodeling?
Hyperpeak Remodeling is a design-build remodeling company serving St. George, Hurricane, La Verkin, and the rest of Washington County. We do kitchen and bathroom remodels, full home remodels, home additions, ADUs, and basement finishing.

Design-build means you work with one company from the first idea to the final walkthrough. Our designers and drafters work alongside me from the start, so the design is built around your budget instead of a beautiful plan that turns out to cost twice what you expected. You get one point of contact, a clear price before construction starts, and a timeline you can actually plan your life around.

What sets us apart is how we run each job. We only take on three active projects at a time. That’s on purpose. It means I’m personally involved in every remodel, and nothing gets handed off and forgotten. Some clients wait a bit to get on our schedule, and almost all of them tell us afterward it was worth it.

Clients also tell us they never feel lost. I explain every step before it happens, I keep people updated without them having to chase me down, and I’m always looking for ways to make a space better without blowing the budget. Sometimes that means suggesting an idea they hadn’t thought of. Sometimes it means telling them where they can save so they can spend where it matters.

What I’m most proud of is the trust we’ve built. Remodeling is a big financial and emotional decision, and a lot of homeowners here have been burned before. When a client tells us it was the easiest remodel they’ve ever been through, that’s the whole point.

If you’re thinking about a remodel, the easiest first step is booking a free phone estimate at www.hyperpeak.build. We’ll talk through your project, give you a realistic ballpark, and lay out clear next steps. No pressure.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
There’s an old saying I live by: “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” I’ve definitely had some luck along the way. But every time, what made the difference was that my past experiences had already prepared me for it.

The luckiest thing that ever happened to me was marrying my wife. She’s the reason Hyperpeak made it through 2024, and she’s a big part of why it runs the way it does today.

My first real Hyperpeak job is a good example of luck meeting preparation. A homeowner in St. George had her house broken into and vandalized, and she needed the whole thing put back together. She searched on Google, found a brand new company with almost no track record, and called me. That was lucky. But I didn’t land and finish that job because of luck. I had years of experience behind me that she never saw: learning Spanish on my mission, which got me onto job sites as a translator for a plumbing crew; running large custom homes as an assistant superintendent in Park City; and gutting and remodeling our own duplex. When the opportunity showed up, I already knew how to handle it.

Bad luck works the same way. Construction is full of it. You open up a wall and find rot, old wiring, or a plumbing problem nobody could have seen. You can’t control that. What you can control is how prepared you are for it. We build contingencies into our estimates, and when something comes up, the client hears about it from me right away, along with what it means for their budget and timeline.

So yes, luck has played a role. It opened the door. Preparation is what got me through it.
