Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Demeter.
Hi Thomas, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Well I was at my grandparents one day, in my room, and decided to look up videos of a DJ controller. Once watching those, I decided that I wanted to buy my first one!! So I bought a little DDJ-SB3 from pioneer, and started doing basic stuff. My mom contacted her close friend from high school, who has been a notable DJ in the state for decades, and asked him to teach me what he could!! He taught me beaatching, transitions, key matching, and phrasing!!
About a year into getting on stages, my best friend from elementary school told me that it would be really cool if I mixed music that I made, so I got a DAW and started to learn production!!
Fast forward about 4 years, I had a really nice controller, consistent shows, and I even flew out to California for a festival!!
Fast forward 5 more years from that, and I’m now playing more events in Utah than I can keep track of!! It’s been a long journey of hard work, but I finally made it where I want to be, and this is only the beginning of it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was smooth sailing for the first couple of years, but after that festival in California, one of my (at the time) close friends said he would clean my nice controller for me. He then proceeded to get addicted to drugs, and sell it from under my feet. So there was about 4 and a half years that I wasn’t getting on stages, until march of this year. Financially I’ve always struggled, but I’ve jumped on these investments because I truly see myself building a career out of this!!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Here’s my bio for extra reference!!
Thomas Demeter, professionally known as MR. TUMN1S or simply TUMN1S, is an American DJ, rapper, and record producer based in Northern Utah’s Greater Salt Lake area. Known for blending multiple genres, original production styles, and raw lyricism, TUMN1S has built a reputation as both an artist and an engineer for many rising artists throughout the local scene. His sound reflects the authentic, unfiltered energy of underground music while continuously evolving through years of dedication to his craft.
Music has been a part of Thomas’s life since childhood. From the moment he could reach a piano, he began teaching himself how to play—without formal instruction. Through years of persistence, he developed an understanding of music theory, composition, and sheet music entirely on his own. Over nearly two decades, he has refined his ear for melody, emotion, and sound design.
In early 2018, Thomas discovered DJing after learning the basics from a family friend. He quickly began performing on stage, mixing music live and building experience behind the decks. Later that same year, he decided to pursue music production for himself. After receiving his first laptop, he began creating simple compositions and experimenting inside his DAW. What started as small ideas evolved into an everyday obsession.
For nearly a decade, Thomas has dedicated himself daily to refining his production, engineering, and overall sound. From understanding mixdowns to mastering his creative process, every release represents years of relentless growth, experimentation, and passion. As TUMN1S continues to evolve, his focus remains the same: creating music that feels genuine, powerful, and unmistakably his own.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’m very energetic, and very optimistic!! And I feel that is a very important part of being personable to others.
