Conversations with Truman Hight

Today we’d like to introduce you to Truman Hight.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
drunk in june got started in 2022, we started out as a group of high school friends who simply wanted to make music together, it led to a rewarding collaborative project that has taken us to places we were never expecting. We started out just playing local shows, plugging away at anything that got offered to us, this hardworking ethos is still our thing and its led to a tour, last years show at Utah Arts Fest and some great (in our opinion) recorded releases. We have always recorded locally (with our Audio Engineer Rowan Stigner), our first Record was cut in 2023 at Audio Inn while every release after that (including our self titled record that came out this year) have been recorded at Counterpoint studios. We make our own band t shirts and try to get our stickers made locally, DIY has always been at the heart of this project’s identity and we can’t see that changing. As of today we are scheduling some shows and getting back out there after taking some time off to re-group after a very busy summer.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has so not been. Keeping a group of musicians together (all together there is 5 of us currently) is seriously one of the most challenging aspects to being a band. We’ve played empty venues, had last minute show cancellations, and some outdoors shows in the grueling summer heat. Being a band in today’s world is not really a money making venture so juggling work schedules with shows, recording dates and practices is hard. We frequently record in marathon 8-10 hour days and that can be a taxing thing to do after an 8 hour work day. All in all we are able to make it work because everyone believes in what we are doing and when things click, it is a great feeling.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We’re musicians, We have built whatever sort of reputation we have on a consistent live show and solid showing no matter the situation we find ourselves in. Our releases sort of differ from our live show, we can be chaotic and loud live but we like building a polished recorded sound, it makes it so seeing us over and over is hopefully worth it to fans while also allowing us to put a new twist on things if we want. It feels like our last record is something that we can really hang our hat on, it is such a great culmination of everything we have been working towards artistically, everyone in the band put their own twist on things, giving it a vibe that feels like its really us.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Getting to play shows to more people, being a musician isn’t really something we got into for money or fame (as funny as that sounds) its more just because we have songs and we’d like if people have fun listening to them and seeing them played live. It doesn’t really matter to us if there’s 1 new face in a crowd or 100 we just want someone to be hearing what we’ve built.
