Today we’d like to introduce you to John Somerville.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My “Thing” is photography, I looooove photography. My passion is when I show someone a photo of themselves and their eyes light up because they see themselves, finally, as others actually see them. I love the THANK YOU! and I LOVE IT! When they see the photos. I also love being unique, all kinds of photos, nature, people, stars, animals, flowers, cosplay, and underwater modeling. Yes, underwater modeling. You name it. That is part of my motto, “If you can Fathom it, we can Capture it” I’ve always loved Cameras and photos been taking photos since high school. It wasn’t until 2015 that I said I really need to learn this better if I am going to make a go of it. That was the beginning and many, many, many hours of study later, I am beginning to understand how it all fits together.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The struggle as a professional photographer is very real, to be perfectly clear the technology has become so amazing that anyone with a minimal understanding of cameras can take a “good” picture. Even a cell phone can take a very good picture. Thus what used to be a business only a few can do, has become anyone with a camera. Fortunately, the curve is still there and to do “Great” photos, you still need high-end gear and high levels of understanding.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Speaking specifically about my photography, I am well known as someone who can do underwater photography of People. The photos are unique and not only require specialized equipment but specialized knowledge. Scuba Certifications and gear in addition to the specialized camera gear and know-how. Part of what sets me apart is recognized awards. Several of my photos have taken first place in the professional category at the Utah State Fair. One of my portraits was awarded second place in the Daily Herald Year in Photos 2018.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Utah and its wide, wide variety of places to take pictures, From the flat white salt of the salt flats to the red rocks of our national parks. Mountains and flowers in the East, and Desert in the west.
