Conversations with Edward Fraze

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edward Fraze.

Hi Edward, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After several years of exploring a passion for ice sculpting at a hobbyist level, Iceworks was launched in 2001 and quickly became Salt Lake City’s premier source for ice décor of all types, designs, and scales.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The majority of the journey has been filled with opportunities to work with wonderful people and events – after all, ice sculptures are for celebrations! The financial crisis of 2008 and the effects of the recent pandemic certainly brought their challenges. As with many small businesses, we held on tightly and have been fortunate to now be experiencing the cautious return of demand.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Working with ice is a practice in the ephemeral. We only get to borrow a little water and hold it in a shape for a short time before it goes back to its journey. As with music, it is best experienced in-person and in the moment rather than after the fact through pictures or video. From the moment a piece receives its last touch and is set in place, it is constantly moving back to its watery state. This immediacy is one of the aspects of ice sculpting that first attracted me and continues to keep me in the here and now.
