Hidden Gems: Meet Marcos Jr. and Paola Rodas of TRU Play

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcos Jr. and Paola Rodas.

Hi Marcos Jr. and Paola, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My wife and I are both of Hispanic origin (Latino/Latina). We are both children of first-generation immigrants. We have often been inspired by marvelous success stories we witnessed and heard while growing up. Our families always believed we could one day too enjoy our own success story.

Upon getting married we agreed to work towards starting our own business. As fate would have it, we were inspired to create a children’s indoor playground that would specifically cater to infants/toddlers. Growing up in Davis County, I had always felt there was plenty to do the older I got. However, once my wife and I began having children we quickly realized there was not much dedicated to younger children.

Our business was launched with the idea of creating a sort of time capsule where young children/infants could safely, freely, and joyfully express themselves with little to no modern-day distractions. Our dream was soon realized and TRU Play was born! Our hope is to provide a space where children can healthily learn and grow in order to better our surrounding community.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Unfortunately, our vision has been interrupted by COVID-19 and the ongoing pandemic it has caused. As a newly formed (family-owned) small business we have seen a dramatic negative impact from this untimely dilemma. Our hope is to come back stronger than before and further service our surrounding community. We have felt the support of many families as they allow us to continue through these ever-so-challenging times.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
TRU Play is a children’s indoor playground specifically designed for ages six and under. We cultivate an atmosphere of organic, intimate, and safe play. Children can share wonderful experiences with their parents/guardians/other children through our open floor playground. Adults can keep an eye on children while relaxing on couches and benches sprinkled throughout the facility (free WIFI available.)

Lack of screens helps to inspire imaginative play. Families can also enjoy meals in our designated kitchen area. Birthday party celebrations (as well as other events) can be held in our private event room. Our family has been able to build an especially magical place unlike any other in the entire state of Utah.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
As a family-inspired business, we have felt ongoing guidance from many directions. None, however, has been as influential as our immediate family members. Our family members have continually contributed sound advice and have never given up hope on our dreams.

We always look to uphold the humble example my parents have especially taught us by starting a business that will bring a positive impact on our community. We owe everything we have accomplished to our family. Their advice has also helped us foster ongoing relationships with those we workaround. This networking effect has happily led us to enjoy a plethora of satisfied customers!
