Conversations with Amanda Moncur

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Moncur.

Hi Amanda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a third-generation hairstylist who grew up watching my mother and grandmother do hair. I never wanted to do hair until my first year of middle school. At the time I had switched schools and was the “new kid”, I was trying to fit in with kids that had been going to school with each other since kindergarten. I felt like kids were not being kindest to me, so my mom took me to have a girl’s day at the salon. I got my hair cut, and when I left I felt beautiful! I got lots of compliments and finally felt like I fit in. I chose to do hair because I want to make other people feel the same way. You never know what people might be going through and I want to be able to be a light in people’s lives through doing hair.

I started hair school at Paul Mitchell the School SLC when I was 16 years old. After I graduated, I hopped around trying to find the perfect salon for me. Then one day, my dad asked me if I wanted to open a salon of my own and make the industry a better place; a place I myself was looking for. My answer was YES!

I opened the salon at the age of 19 years old and I never looked back! The salon has now been open for 8+ years. I have 10 amazing team members at the Amanda Moncur salon. I am now a hair extension educator and behind the chair specializing in hair extension and blonding. There’s no brief way to describe how I got where I am today. It has been a lot of hard work and determination. I have messed up and learned a lot along the way. I truly believe I wouldn’t be where I am today without my failures because I have learned so much from them.

When I was initially building my salon business I went out every day for months and met 10 people. I would ask them to come into the salon. Now the salon phones are ringing off the hook 8 years later. If you want to build your business now, just know your hard work will pay off.. just keep going.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening a business is hard work. There were lots of days I questioned if we would be able to make it as a new business. What got me though was envisioning what my business could be! I have rebranded my salon once from a franchise into my own.

That was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done because I wasn’t sure if guests came to our salon for the brand it was or for the people creating the experiences in the salon. In the end, it all turned out amazing but it’s scary to make a big change like that. Remember that relationships make all the difference when it comes to business.

Hiring has always been difficult because we are a very close group with a culture of love and serving. We hire on people’s hearts and not their ability to do hair, it can be hard to find people who share the same values as you.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Hair extensions truly have my heart. Helping someone finally get the hair they have always wanted is a very amazing experience to be involved with. Our whole salon is known for blonding services.

It’s hard to find that person who will get your blonde right, we want to be the salon that gets it right. I am most proud of our passion for education at our salon. Even when we think we have learned a lot, we learn even more. We always want to be on top of the trends and learn how to be able to provide an even better service for our guests.

What sets us apart is the mentality of always growing and bettering ourselves as hairstylists. You can be good at hair… It takes a lot more work to become great.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My business partner, Teal has been such an amazing support to our salon’s vision and growth, our salon would not be where it is today without her by my side. Tina Black and Shaun Chiodo are my business coaches.

They have encouraged me and helped me grow along the way.

Every single one of my salon team members that is with us today or that has moved on deserves credit for what our salon has grown into because they helped me pave the foundation of the business. If you’re reading this, thank you!
