Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Howard.
Hi Angela, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a passion for art and photography and knew I would be an artist or creative somehow ‘when I grew up’. When I went to college, I decided I was going to work toward a Fine Arts Degree and focused on fine art photography and graphic design. People I knew started asking me if I could photograph their families, engagements, and weddings – and I was hooked. I loved being able to photograph people’s stories and document such amazing moments.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would say that just trying to learn how to run a business was a struggle. Learning how to be ‘legit’ and do accounting are the far less glamorous parts of the business, but after some trial and error, I figured out what works for me and I actually came to love the process and the ‘BTS’ of it all.
It’s also incredibly hard to learn how to not take it personally when someone doesn’t book you or like the finished product – because photography is such a piece of yourself that you are putting out into the world. After years of being in the industry, I naturally began to understand the idea of repel and attract. When I found clients who really resonated and responded to my work and people that I had a natural camaraderie with, the product was SO much better. That made me realize that it’s those people who I am best able to serve, and it’s okay if not everyone feels like I’m their photographer, because there’re so many talented photogs out there!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a creative person, I love that I am able to diversify with the types of photography that I am able to do. I specialize in commercial photography, headshots, food photography, family sessions, special events, and wedding photography. I would say I am best known for weddings, food, and headshots.
I think I am most proud of what my clients say about their experiences working with me. It’s the best thing in the world when they tell me how comfortable I made them feel or how much fun they had or that I made their event or session even better than they could have hoped.
I think one of the things that set me apart is that I really want to create a low stress and fun environment because I believe that’s when I do my best work but I also believe that’s when people are able to really show who they are and then I’m able to tell their story.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think my approachability and openness is one of the key aspects to my success because getting your photo taken can be such a personal and sometimes stressful situation. Making people feel confident and comfortable is the first step in creating images that my clients will love.
I also think that my attention to detail is incredibly important as well. It is vital to creating high-end content that showcases the person, brand, or products, especially for those clients who are more commercially based.
