Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Dickman.
Lisa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After 20+ years as an LCSW working with people (mostly teens) in the mental health field, Covid hit. I found myself no longer working and finally feeling I had the opportunity to start another business. I decided I would stay home and take care of my kids (school was closed and they were homeschooling), I am a single mom so staying home during this time just made the most sense. I am also the co-owner of a local roaster, coffee shop, and bakery called 3 Cups and had helped the business privet daily to keep the establishment afloat during the shutdown.
Anyway, I spent a great deal of time during the shutdown focusing on my own personal work. I had no idea what new thing I wanted to do with my life but felt committed to finding something that would push me out of my comfort zone, allow me to use my creativity, and something that would put me in the driver’s seat as my own boss. I was introduced to a gentleman who owned a marketing business that was being used only for internal work. He wanted to bring someone in that could turn the company into a business that would make a lot of money. I initially said no but later changed my mind (thanks to the support of my brother) .
I came up with a plan, a name for the business, and financial projections and on the day of signing the paperwork, I decided I didn’t want to run a company that would only give me 10% ownership and at that moment, decided I would take 100% ownership and start the business myself. No plan on how I would do this financially especially when I hadn’t worked for eight months prior to this day.
I had one employee and the desire to make it work. We have built the business piece by piece and I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way and I’ve had to fail and learn every step of the way but slowly the wheels have been turning and moving the company forward. We now have more than a dozen clients and three employees and love the empire we are building
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I kind of talked about this on the previous page but no it has not been a smooth road. There have been times when I didn’t know how I would pay my employees but I have focused on trusting that the universe will provide and if this is meant to be it will work and if it’s not, it won’t. I’ve let go of trying to control the outcome
I also started a business that I literally knew nothing about so the learning curve was and continues to be steep. I just take it one day at a time, focus on what is working, and move forward.
I have a great team and honestly, that makes all the difference
We’ve been impressed with Nymble LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a digital marketing business owned and run by women FOR women.
We focus on social media management, paid FB and google ads, email marketing, web design, and SEO. We are a purpose-driven marketing company and give 3% of our sales to organizations we love like the IFW that finances other women starting their own businesses.
We love inspiring women to go after their dreams and supporting them to make and meet their goals for growth
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe having a strong team is the number one thing that will create success. I am passionate about creating a business that women want to work for because they feel inspired, valued and they can grow as individuals.
I want my employees to feel like they are owners of the business without the stressors that owning a business brings. That they have flexibility with their schedules, room for their unique voices, creative expression, and that they feel valued.
