Today we’d like to introduce you to Obed Richard Hernandez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I came to the United States when I was 18 years old. When I arrived a friend told me something that I always remember, he said to me: “we come to work in this country! And when you are a good and responsible worker in this country, your work is valued and you will always open more doors to your personal progress”. I have always enjoyed learning and progressing in my jobs and I made it a goal to start my own business. I worked at a painting company for 7 years and I learned to run the jobs, to do quality work, and above all to work as a team. After those years of experience, with effort and commitment, I founded OB Master Painting in 2005. We began working and now we have been in business for more than 15 years, in Salt Lake City and throughout the state of Utah. It makes me proud and gives me great satisfaction when I hear our clients express how happy they are with our work, and that after many years they still have our number and continue to call us again and again to do custom work. We initially began working residential jobs; however, Salt Lake City has been growing rapidly and now we have moved on to commercial projects as well. Working large building construction projects has given us the opportunity to grow, but we’ll never forget or leave our residential clients, they will always be important to us because they are the ones that got us where we are today. I am happy to say that after some difficult moments and some complicated situations that have happened in life, here we are, continuing to move forward! Today we are a company with 15-20 full-time employees as well as many subcontractors who help us keep this business running. I want to thank my team since without them this would not be possible. I am extremely grateful for them for being such excellent workers along with my right-hand man Esteban Uribe who always supports me. Also, thanks to my family who has supported me and continues to support me throughout this journey.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I mentioned before, it hasn’t been easy. In our history, there are a number of battles we’ve had to fight but I want to mention the one that was the most difficult, it was in the years 2009 – 2010 during the recession. At the time many construction projects completely stopped and we all lost money. It was difficult to see that after having a team of about 20 employees, now I was working alone again, but time passed, we endured it, we recovered and here we are, receiving and providing support to our clients and employees.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My advice is to always keep the commitment in mind, first with yourself and then with the clients. That always results in clients and providers viewing you with respect. It is also very important to be a kind person and of good dealings, that helps to be recommended and thus gain more clients and contacts.
